Yelp is one company that is a fraud in my opinion. I have heard from so so many small business owners on them getting calls from yelp about being able to pay to have yelp delete bad reviews. Do you really think yelp will last the next decade? AWS is market leader. Join a winner.

As far as I know, a business with bad rating or ranking can contact yelp and if they advertise on yelp, yelp will give them some special care and help them to figure out why the ranking and rating is bad. Yelp will also fix the problem that is ‘legitimate’. On the other hand, people don’t advertise with yelp would get much love. In the long run, you will see biased results toward advertised businesses.

Def AWS. Have you seen Amzn vs Yelp stock? And Seattle cost of living. Wtf is wrong with you. How do you clear interviews??

100k RSU for master+1.5yr seems low. Definitely negotiate with Yelp.

I guess 150k RSU. But also it depends on your interview performance

Push for 200k and you’d probably settle for 150k. Also, signon could probably be 40k

Yelp is good with refreshers. I got a significant bump after my first year

  • For a new grad, I'd say AWS. More stable and looks great on a resume. SF also sucks to live in.
However, I have experienced the Amazon culture and it fucking sucks unless you have the personality of a drone. IMO, suffer through it for a year or two then go somewhere with a better culture, which matters much more to me now, which is why I'm at Yelp. The ppl are pretty awesome.

  • Career growth is often a function of company growth. AWS is growing super fast. Yelp isn’t. Public information in both cases. You can also look at employee growth. Fact that AWS is adding so many new employees says you’ll have chances to move up. I agree with previous folks — if I interviewed you in 2 years for your next job and you said you chose Yelp over AWS, I’d dig pretty hard on your thought process. Could be a good choice but not an obvious one

I did a bunch of candidate evaluations at Amazon and a Masters didn’t really count for much. I remember the first time I was in a room discussing this and there was a candidate who had just done a Masters. Treated him just like a regular fresh college grad. Sad, but true.

Agreed. I sat in on a loop where someone had 4-5 years experience, and took 2 years off to complete a master and was almost demoted to sde1.
