Any comments on the following comparison ? Amazon - Seattle Base 113k Signon Y1- 30k and Y2-26k RSU-70 shares Yelp -SF Base 125k Signon-25k RSU - 100k over 4 years What’s the TC I can aim for amazon SDE1? How much can I negotiate with Amazon for SDE1 with a masters degree ?
100k RSU for master+1.5yr seems low. Definitely negotiate with Yelp.
What’s the number I can push towards ?
I guess 150k RSU. But also it depends on your interview performance
Definitely AWS, better reputation and highly valued skill sets.
I did a bunch of candidate evaluations at Amazon and a Masters didn’t really count for much. I remember the first time I was in a room discussing this and there was a candidate who had just done a Masters. Treated him just like a regular fresh college grad. Sad, but true.
Agreed. I sat in on a loop where someone had 4-5 years experience, and took 2 years off to complete a master and was almost demoted to sde1.
Yelp is one company that is a fraud in my opinion. I have heard from so so many small business owners on them getting calls from yelp about being able to pay to have yelp delete bad reviews. Do you really think yelp will last the next decade? AWS is market leader. Join a winner.
Grow up smart Googler. Try to read more and understand what business really is. You also are making statements without any well established evidence.
I guess consistent feedback from SB owners is not evidence?
Op did you just graduate from your Masters program?
Yes
And is it new grad hiring or a team hire?
Had to make the same choice about a year ago. Went with AWS. Was good decision in retrospect
Why AWS? What tipped you? Just curious cos this decision is quite difficult for me right now
AWS has a lot of products. Personally, sounded much more interesting work. Also, easy to get promoted within a year or two. Finally, it's in Seattle so will be spending less(cheeper housing compared to SF) and making more (no state income tax). Oh also, total compensation was higher for AWS
Def AWS. Have you seen Amzn vs Yelp stock? And Seattle cost of living. Wtf is wrong with you. How do you clear interviews??
Career growth is often a function of company growth. AWS is growing super fast. Yelp isn’t. Public information in both cases. You can also look at employee growth. Fact that AWS is adding so many new employees says you’ll have chances to move up. I agree with previous folks — if I interviewed you in 2 years for your next job and you said you chose Yelp over AWS, I’d dig pretty hard on your thought process. Could be a good choice but not an obvious one
Why are you even debating this choice. If you do not see long term potential you are not a fit for AWS and should take the Yelp offer. 1.5 years of experience does not equal higher pay at AWS.
Seems you will net in more in aws, plus better tech
Thanks for your input. I’m wondering how much I can push my AWS recruiter during negotiation
