How is the AWS SA group? Getting an offer for an L6 SA in the group. Any thoughts on growth prospects? Currently in Amazon in a TPM L6 role. Will compensation change? TC: 225k YOE: 10
L7 SA promotion feels completely out of reach for me. There doesn’t seem to be a path.
I was offered SSA (L6) a week ago. And I personally know many SAs and SSAs who’ve been stuck at the same position for many years. Although I haven’t discussed with them why, it does seem like there isn’t a clear path forward to L7. My HM said “our SSAs are getting offered as Directors and VPs from many companies” lol, but he didn’t once talk about progression within AWS which has me a little worried. If you really want this position I recommend negotiating as good comp as possible and the Leave after 4yrs once your stocks vest; not a great career plan, rather mostly a great money plan+you’ll learn a lot (which I think you can learn elsewhere too depending on your situation)
What was the tc offered ?
I am also interested in transferring from tpm to SA, how you prepared it ?

It really depends on your manager and extended team (like anywhere). In general, the SA role is fairly desirable and people in different roles at AWS transfer into it. The people I know who have left the role either leave the company entirely, elect to be SA managers, or join another org in AWS such as a service team or region services. Your TC target can increase based on your performance within the L6 pay band but you'll find that you'll likely make more than your TC target in years 3 and 4 due to the number of shares you receive based on HR's projections when you get your offer. Downsides to being a L6 SA in general - you need to check off many boxes to get promoted to a L7. They exist but are very rare. If you aren't happy with the TC offered on hire, I believe you have some room to negotiate upward.
Thanks a lot for the detailed response. I did not know there is a scope for negotiation with internal transfer. My goal is definitely to be an SA manager eventually and hopefully L7 in 3-4 years Not sure if that is feasible. Would you say promotion to L7 is more likely (or easier) in a TPM vs SA?
