Any solution architects here ?how do you like your role ? is it well paid ? how is worklife balance ? is there too much travel involved ? is it mostly sales oriented ?

At AWS we have pre-sales SAs (essentially sales engineers): part of the account team, and post sales SAs: part of the delivery team (pro-serve) aka field consultants. I am part of pro-serve (Cloud Infra architect is my specific role) and travel is around 30%, but highly depends on the engagement. Good WLB when at HQ. If you want more sales-y role, you need to be in presales Solution Architect. If you wanna build and deliver tech, be in pro-serve.

TLDR: presales SAs propose solutions to clients, postsales consultants/SAs/Architects build and deliver on said proposed solutions to the clients.

If you want to spend half your time doing timecards and tracking hours, go to ProServe. If you want to design something that is someone else's problem to build, go to Sol Arch.
