Abbott - PM, Regulatory Affairs, Job Offer Evaluation

OFFER: Company: Abbott Neuromod Position: Project Manager, Regulatory Affairs Location: Remote TC (base + sign-on bonus): $120,000 YOE: 0 in project management, 2.5 years in Reg Affairs and orthopedic meddev with no prior work experience Writing to see if my offer is fair. From networking with other PMs at Abbott, it seems that the TC is around 140k; however, these individuals have PMPs, RACs, and 7+ years of meddev experience in Reg Affairs or Clinical Evaluation. As for PMs in other meddev companies, Abbott seems to pay significantly higher than the traditional meddevs (i.e., Stryker, BD, Medtronic, Siemens, Philips) at least in the entry-level PM roles. I plan to utilize this experience as a PM to leverage myself into a technical PM position in Health Tech in 3-5 years (e.g. Apple Health, Google/Fitbit, etc) YOE: 2.5 TC: 95k #medicaldevice #meddev #biotech #healthcare #abbott #jnj #medtronic #applehealth #projectmanager #pm #regulatoryaffairs #regulatory #biotech #stryker #offer #offerevaluation #compensation #intuitivesurgical

Siemens pay is notoriously low

Johnson & Johnson Ruasa OP Apr 1, 2022

Agreed. Worked there in the past and currently being paid more than senior managers, bioconjugates

Medtronic BREX35 Apr 1, 2022

Seems low

Johnson & Johnson Ruasa OP Apr 1, 2022

I would expect around 140k if I had actual PM/leadership experience, but my 2.5 years of work experience has basically been grunt work in a RA/QA function

Intuitive Surgical tJxq36 Apr 2, 2022

Pretty reasonable. The RA market is very hot but it’s a tough job and hard to do well. If you stick with RA my advice is to try to get into submissions work

Abbott blahugh Apr 4, 2022

Low, counter with 140k because once you are in don't expect much income growth and you will work hard while there.

Johnson & Johnson Ruasa OP Apr 4, 2022

140k is the expected top-end salary for someone who fits the job description closely which is someone with 7+ years of PM and QA/RA meddev experience. I only have 3 years of experience in QA/RA with zero PM experience. The hiring managers were willing to test my candidacy out even with my lack of experience so if I countered with 140k, I would feel that I am slapping them in the face.

Abbott blahugh Apr 4, 2022

Fair points and maybe in some locations this offer would be considered competitive, but not all.

Abbott SzCa53 Apr 4, 2022

Looks reasonable for 0 YOE PM - do you know the grade ? Also hope that base is in 6 figures. It’s a good culture at doers level so you will learn and adapt.

Johnson & Johnson Ruasa OP Apr 4, 2022

I do not. Another blinder suggested the pay grade would be G18! Thanks for the input, I was thinking it was fairly reasonable although I could've been slightly more agressive with a counter offer, maybe 125k TC

Abbott buJI87 Apr 6, 2022

Note Abbott actually has two separate pay ranges for the same grades, so there's a G18 and a G18 'Premium'. Your offer is in line with the lower end of G18. I do know some Abbott PMs who were able to transition into big tech, but it is not as likely as an RA PM. The RA PMs I've seen are pretty limited in their skillset and if you don't have much submission experience or PM experience you will likely develop neither to a high level as an RA PM because you won't be driving critical cross functional projects like the actual PMs or getting your hands dirty with actual submissions

Abbott POJ84 Apr 4, 2022

So if you're getting equity, it has to be grade 18 and up. If it's grade 18 and up, you should be shooting for at least the Top of 2nd tier, 132k. That is the mid point.

Abbott SzCa53 Apr 4, 2022

Grade18 TC 125k is definitely possible. Reach for it.

Hi OP, sorry for hijacking your post but I'm evaluating an offer from JnJ and I'm wondering what growth opportunities are like over there? I've got a remote role and I'm wondering if face time with other employees is important for recognition.

Johnson & Johnson Ruasa OP May 9, 2022

Growth opportunities are easily there. Just establish a strong connection with your manager or other managers in your technical field and they will refer you to those roles. There are many young (late 20's to mid 30's) individuals in senior manager to upper management roles that were all promoted internally from entry-level roles

Thanks! I also read a few posts about toxic culture there, on blind. Is that true overall? Hopefully that's just one or two teams... And last question - how open is the communication between different business units at JnJ? I used to work at another medtech giant and loved being able to see the cool work done by other teams every year at a conference.
