Accepted offer from AWS. Now not so sure

Aug 24, 2017 79 Comments

I accepted an offer from AWS. Electronically signed the docs etc. As stupid as it is, I am now having second thoughts about it. Will I be blacklisted from any future AWS hiring if I back out now? What could be the implications?

Once you sign it doesn't look good to back out. Amazon is an extremely aggressive company and I would not be surprised if they blacklist you for backing out

    Honestly: go.

That said: there is no such blacklist. On the contrary: you are now a precious 1 out of every 8 loops who got an offer, and this will be in the system. Recruiters will reach you like vultures, since now you can be hired without a loop if the HM so decides.

Ahem... really? Since when more mediocre developers can deliver than fewer good developers? Or is that the practice at MS? No wonder IE never caught up to html5.

1 in 8 sounds high. from the interviews I've done it's about 1 in 10.

as for being too picky, it's better to do that than hire any old crap that comes along. if MS hires has such low standards it explains why windows is such a pile of crap.

Yes, they will never let you apply again. And I personally know a hiring manager that blacklisted someone for backing out of an amazon offer in another organization. So yes, it happens.

What are you all talking about? Not blacklist per say but they can say this person is a no hire in the future. Same at Microsoft and Amazon.

      Will recap:
      * @heady, who doesn't work at Amazon makes claim about Amazon process
      * Six people who work at Amazon contradict that claim

Re: "What are you talking about?"
@heady, you fail the overwhelming evidence test.

You can back out and I probably would. Amazon started layoffs last week.

Sounds like percentage of PIP will increase soon. Hang tight folks who were joking about low performers! You could become the one whether you agree or not.

Take it from me Amazon does not have a blacklist. I work in recruitment, no such thing exists!

    • Liar on both fronts.

I know this because I was contacted by an AWS recruiter about a job in 2015. Totally bombed it because i was sick..

Typically if you don't move forward you are locked out for a year. However, if you really foul up, you are banned for 3 years or life.

Found a ton of jobs recently where i was a great fit. Even with personal referrals and the like, i never got looked at.

If you are really a recruiter, semd me a PM with a time/date to discuss opportunities and to help submit me for positions.

No such thing as a blacklist there. AWS has so much attrition they would be crazy to blacklist anyone

As an Amazon employee of a bit over 4 years who is considering leaving, I recommend you go. Amazon is a great place to work, and having Amazon experience on your resume is fantastic if you decide it's not for you and want to leave later.

It’s not criminal and you’re not breaking some code of honor. If you really want to do the right thing, reach out to the hiring manager and say what you posted here. Have a conversation with them. Any worthwhile manager wants you to do what makes you happy. You’re not valuable to the team if you are regretting the decision on day one.
