I’m working at this small startup and things seem to be moving into a potential acquihire. Does anyone have some insights, anything I should be aware or things to watchout for? TC: 150k + ~6% company shares YoE: 10
Been through 2, it’s usually all downhill from the moment you are acquired, unless the company acquiring you is a tier 1-2 tech company (fangs etc)
What was it that went downhill?
If you are key to the business you might get golden handcuffs, if you’re not it’s all up to the acquiring company culture. As I said if a tier 1 tech co it might be ok. Word of caution with golden handcuff. They might look appealing but usually aren’t worth it especially if you are early in your career.
If you are a high performer that they want to retain, and you show you're willing to stay on but not exactly eager, they'll usually give you a 2-4 year compensation plan that rewards you for completing your term. By then, the parts of what used to be your startup are likely gone, and you can take your 💰💰💰 and quit
Depends in the acquisition value, but as it’s most likely a simple acquihire, that 6% will be close to $0.
It’s likely they will “compensate” somehow with more stocks than a regular offer, but not a function of the 6%. If the deal goes through and I get an offer, I’ll report back what ended up happening.
