Interviews plus job stress

I’m committed to doing the work I have well, and the company I work for is okay. The people are nice for the most part. The attrition rate is terrible, however, and we are understaffed, like everyone probably. My manager is a train wreck. Two of my co-workers left to get away from them. I feel like half my job is managing them, which cuts into my time to do the actual work. I’m so stressed. I met with HR, my manager, the managers manager, and I’ve tried to negotiate some changes and I’m not being heard. I even hired a job coach to try to learn how to work better with the person. The manager said they’d put me up for a promotion, but I don’t even want one, that’s money which is nice, but I want some respect and some more autonomy to get my job done. So, I decided to see what else is out there.

I’ve had some success in interviewing, but no offers. I made it all the way to the top VP of the department at Uber. They didn’t even have the courtesy to tell me they weren’t making an offer after 7 interviews and three weeks. I also had a similar experience at Apple, Western Digital, and AMD with getting to the final interviews and not getting an offer (although they politely told me they were not proceeding, so that was appreciated.)

I have interviews at Zoom and Visa lined up, so I’m preparing better answers for that top VP, since I’m thinking that’s where I may be stalling. That’s taking several hours for each company.

Google has pre-interviewed me for team matching as well. I just don’t know if I can do it. I haven’t submitted the paperwork the recruiter wants because I am feeling overwhelmed. I hear they are rude, denigrate the skills of candidates and play mind games, so I’m not even sure I want to apply.

I am trying to do a good job where I’m at. I am trying to interview. I have no time for other pursuits.

Do I just live with the bad job and interview less? Or not interview at all, and hope the job gets better or my direct boss quits?

Anyone go through this? What did you do? I’m literally having nightmares.

Stay the course, fact that you're getting all the way means you have what it takes. Just need one yes to change things! Anyone that can help you with prep for final interview, to give constructive feedback?

No feedback so far, but the fact that they are letting me meet the top folks is encouraging. I’m working on how I can engage better at that level, taking a few online trainings.

  • You just have to stick with interviewing, identify what you're doing wrong and correct. Its 2022, no one should stay in a bad environment

Regarding Google: I'm sure experiences run the gamut, but my interviewers were fantastic. Respectful, attentive, and knowledgeable. The lengthy process stinks but none of the experience you mention above.
