Currently a project manager at an ad agency but I don't like how little I contribute to the end result. The majority of my work revolves around delivering work done by other people. I would love to be able to interface with end consumers and learn how to improve a product and then move from there. What kind of skills make this jump easier? MAJOR LONG SHOT, but is there anyone in a Product Management role in a vertical farming or consumer tech role that I could DM and learn more? :)
TIA!!

You’ll have better luck with a shift to Program Management. Look into design program management client side... Or get an MBA. that’s the quickest way I’ve seen people move into product- I wouldn’t get one, but Amazon and others have a robust mba programs.

I'm really not looking to a soul sucking company like Amazon. Been around Blind long enough to read the horror stories.
If you can, what is the biggest difference between Program and Product? The plan is to attend a hybrid MS program at Southern California that is at the intersection of tech, design, and business in 2ish years

You have 1.5y of experience. Work for another 3.5y. Not many company’s do product better than amazon. You better get used to soul sucking if you want to be on product side. It’s not all puppy dogs and rainbows... esp your first few gigs if you ever get to product- you’ll own something like an A/B tool that has 2 locations as part of a SAAS tool etc...

I disagree with Oracle. Get out of agencies as quickly as you can. Nothing, even Amazon, is more soul sucking. If you have great project management skills then program management is a good way to get into a company where you can learn how things actually work in the business world. Then you can start taking courses on PM to see if it’s interesting.
Difference between project work and Product is that project managers are graded in process, product managers are graded on business outcomes. Product managers usually interface with customers and drive strategic roadmaps.
