Hi Blinders, I have a SDE 1 new grad offer at Amazon and a Data Scientist offer at SAP. No team and work information yet at Amazon. At SAP, I’ll be working in the NLP, Language Models and machine learning. Amazon - 112 base/ 26+22 bonus/ 80 stocks in Seattle SAP - 125 / 10/ 10 in SF I am very much interested in machine learning. I am in dilemma regarding 1. company brand name 2. If I accept data scientist role, will that limit my optiona for next switch? 3. If i accept SDE 1 role with work related to backend or frontend, how will it impact a company switch to machine learning? Need expert suggestions as soon as possible. Thanks!! #newgrad #datascientist #softwareengineer
Amazon appears to be a livable wage for Seattle, while SAP isnt a livable wage for SF without serious concessions. Also SDE is probably a more flexible career choice. Either way great job on multiple offers. Best of wishes!
Thanks!
I live in Seattle but work for SAP. It will boil down to WLB. What’s more important? They work you to the bone at Amazon. Most I know stay 2 years and leave because they are putting in 80 hours a week. SAP has a great WLB. But the stock and pay are generally better at Amazon than SAP.
"Urgent help needed"??? You made it sound like a medical emergency. Every second post is needing help regarding offers. Yours is no different.
SAP. If you want to be a DS don't be a SDE, it will not help. And if you think to move internally to get a ML role, know that you're not the only one trying to do that.
Not sure what they told you and I don't know all teams at SAP, but from what I heard DS here is mostly either pre sales or plugging together stuff, not really heavy on statistical learning etc.. Note also that we are (still) neither really data driven nor a mathematical company. I'd strongly suggest to go to Amazon unless it is the business context you're after. Also, what's your field of study?
Take Amazon, you can always switch to a role you're more interested in after you've been there for a while.
Go for Amazon! That’s what I wanted to say, but then I read your message again. If you don’t know your team in Amazon, please consider joining in SAP. It’s a cool place to work in the field that you are interested in. If you don’t like, you can change to any FAANG company later within a year.
Amazon pay will go a lot further in Seattle vs SAP in the bay area. Company "brand" is irrelevant. Do you want to do data science or SDE route? SDE experience will probably qualify you for a wider array of positions, many of which you may be uninterested in. Id choose the offer based on what you want to do with your career. Can't go wrong either way.
Amazon. First it’s always good to have SDE exp in ur career. Later on u wud realize that if u r working in ml, having a sde exp helps a lot. Ml is useful only when it is in production. And this is where ur sde helps Second SAP is all floss. They don’t do any good ML. The words u mentioned are there to fool u. Think for yourself. Which ML product has SAP built all these years? Leonardo was a total gimmick. Don’t join SAP. PERIOD
Seconded. It still has a few fairly technical departments in the data management area, but regarding Data Science nothing that would motivate me tbh.
Hey @SAP, what kind of sde experience would be helpful while working in ML? Front end, back end or something else? I’m new to the industry, therefore if you could throw some light on this, it’ll be very helpful.
