Hey Blinders, Recently got an offer from EA for a senior PM position as follows: Base: 160k Bonus: 15% RSU’s: 110k over 3 years TC: 220k Old manager at Netflix wants me to join team, says process will take until end of January. TC would be much higher and product sounds interesting. Pros of EA: chill WLB, great manager, gaming, and potential of going full remote, 2 minute commute Cons of EA: low TC, slow upwards mobility Pros of Netflix: TC, get to move out of gaming Cons of Netflix: bad manager, cut throat culture, commute to Los Gatos (1 hr minimum each way) Looking for advice on what to do next. Should I accept offer and continue interviewing for Netflix and quit early? Really don’t want to burn bridges as I used this manager connection to get the job at EA. How do I delay an offer long enough to hear a response from Netflix? Current TC: 165k base, worthless paper options YoE:5, 3 as PM #pm #productmanager #product
Mostly the upside in TC. Reading all these FAANG blind posts makes me feel bad about my TC given my YOE
Manager isn’t necessarily bad or ill-willed, just incompetent and can sometimes micromanage
Bad managers can make your life hell. How was your experience working for this “incompetent” manager?
Didnt know the difference between MAU and DAU as a PM with 15+ years of experience. Thought you could just multiply DAU by 30 to get MAU. Also this manager was known to steal work from direct reports by removing their name from decks and replacing it with their own
Money isn't everything in life. Go for good WLB, commute and team as a priority. Brand matters but only to an extent when you go for an interview.
Don’t just think about this job. Think about the next one too. Netflix has a better brand, product culture, and likely a better network.
Brand matters to a huge extent. I would suck it up and take the Netflix job if you can. Work for a couple of years and look for something else. You will have a much easier time finding a decent gig at a comparable tech company with Netflix on your resume than EA
Money and prestige is extremely important. Netflix will give you much higher TC and better options down the road, even if you have to deal with burning a bridge and a crap manager for a bit.
Sounds like you ended up going with Netflix. I'm currently about to interview with EA for a senior PM role. Any tips?
By your own description it doesn’t sound like this Netflix gig is worth it. Why would you want to commute 2hrs each day to work for a bad manager?! My vote is to take the EA gig and look around for better opportunities in a year or so.
