I’m choosing between two data science offers: Facebook Data Scientist * More focused on hypothesis testing/stats/products than a pure AI/ML role JP Morgan Data Scientist * Joining the decision science team within the new digital banking org in the UK Q1: which one would allow for an easier transition into quant research? (poll below) Q2: Is it possible to get quant research interviews with my profile, without a Ph.D.? If not, what'd be your advice? For context, I have : - A masters degree in Information Engineering from Oxbridge (heavy on ML and stats and probability) - 4 YOE as a DS in various e-commerce companies TC: 🥜 in UK
Question: why did you put checkbox instead of radio button for the poll when you know you won’t get clean data based on this collection method?
I messed up, first time setting up a poll
My two cents having worked on Wall St and Big Tech, JPM digital banking sounds like retail banking to me. It is rare to move from retail to investment banking (where the more interesting quant jobs are). Personally, I think a quant firm (or quant group within an investment bank) would look more favourably at FB experience. By the sound of it, stats/hypothesis testing would translate better to designing/testing investment strategies too. Also, TC or GTFO.
Agree with the points. Also the DS teams are JP are a mix of Data Science and Coding etc, not all of the team actually have good work. Also OP as Apple said the markets division(quant) has zero overlap with retail.
The is exactly the insight I need, thanks both!
Don’t go to JPMC, infrastructure is outdated and slow, you will waste so much time just querying data
100 times this. That is, if your manager can even figure out how to give your team access to the right data.
Do you know the basics such as Ito integrals and martingales?
I’m not a quant but I’d go with FB because I feel stats is more relevant for anyone hoping to go into quant research. I’ve done tons of ML and I feel like it’s cheap parlour tricks compared to stats.
Oh my God. Go with Facebook. I really regret going with JPMC. Someone else said it, but JPMC tech infrastructure is really old and just bad. You will waste so much time trying to figure out how to go back in time 10 years to get things to work, and you're quite limited in the tools you can use. In addition, once you finally get access to stuff, it will take forever to actually query data. Finally, your time will be wasted in many meetings with many people. Facebook will have a better data culture, and there is a bootcamp at the beginning.

I was in QR at JPMC. I would say both are okayish good(for getting into quant roles) but best would be if you could get an offer in JP/GS/MS quant and then shift to buy side since you already have a lot of DS experience. Personally I would go for FB since it is a better brand (for DS).
Assuming I work for FB for two years, will it be easy to get quant research interviews? I worry that they won’t even consider people without PhD
Hypothesis testing is a useless skill in quant.
