Another one of these. I'm currently an L5 with 3 years experience and received these offers. I'm having a hard time choosing because team matching with Google has been difficult - I haven't found anything that peaks my interest yet. Google leveled me at L3, Airbnb at L4. Comp packages ended up in the same range with a large salary difference due to level (total for both around 250). I think Airbnb is a better fit culturally but I'm a little concerned about potential growth since I'm not really sure what technical challenges remain for Airbnb to solve. Also there's the question of their IPO. Thoughts on which would be better for career growth?
Op is being low balled at airbnb but starting one level higher is still a better position to be in. It's really hard to get a promo at Google within 12 months. Plus Google won't give Op a stock refresh this year
Tons of tech challenges here !
OP, can you plz share the interview process for Airbnb?? Is it all leetcode hard problems only??
Hah, no. Just study up, do practice questions, write actual code that compiles and you should be fine.
come join us! we need you more than google
I would pick Airbnb
im considering move to Google or FB
Yes I hear graphql is getting a lot of pushback so makes sense why it would move to Google.
Currently work at airbnb and can definitely say we are working on quite a few really interesting problems. If you honestly think that airbnb is just about booking a room then you haven’t done your homework and you probably should go to Google. Also, there’s a size issue. Airbnb is less than 1k eng and google has thousands. Their process is much more mature. I would imagine that at Airbnb you have a greater likelihood to impact the actual product.
Airbnb has a lot more than 400 Eng
Total comp are the same? Then you are getting massively low balled by Airbnb. It's pre-IPO stock and their CFO just left because he wanted to IPO but the CEO did not. For Airbnb I'd expect at least 50-100% more stock than Google. Minimum of 300k for Airbnb in my opinion. L3 for Google might seem like it sucks, but if you're good you'll quickly get L4 and another stock grant.
Well, that's good to know. I'm going to see how much wiggle room I have. Thanks.
