I am interning at Amazon and it's a 12 week internship while I am in my 3rd week now. I wana do well and get a return offer. Any must dos? Would appreciate if Amazonians could lend some advice here.
In corporate life, align/orient your self towards revenue/customer. Work Hard Keep your commitments Learn how to Communicate clearly and succinctly – some call this Speak Up – in my experience people listen when you have a strong belief in your idea and can communicate it well a. Understand your audience and prepare for the questions/concerns they will have b. Be sure to give a recommendation – do not bring a problem without having thought of some potential solutions including the pros and cons c. Share information (as appropriate) Ask for what you want
I was in your shoes previously. The primary goal for you should be to make your mentor and a manger look good. Deliver before deadlines, always be prepared to discuss your projects or assignments, and while awaiting code reviews or whatever, see if you can kill off some old tickets. Managers love that shit. Ask your mentor questions, but don’t ask them too many. Really research what you have a question about, and make sure you’ve exhausted all internal and external resources. Also while awaiting more work or reviews, look at what your teammates are working on. Become familiar with other people’s project as that can become content used in discussions and stuff. Show interest in everything your team does. Finally, really research who your customers are. What do they need and want? Based on tickets, what seems to be problems they’ve encountered? Be very familiar with customer interaction with your service or product. And have fun, it’s a really good opportunity :)
Thanks a lot
Deliver your project on time. Learn from your CRs. Take work off your mentor's plate. Make sure you are prepared for 1:1s, schedule them if you don't have any.
Mostly This ^. If someone tells you to do X in a code review don’t make them tell you to do it again. Learn from the feedback you’re given. You also need to deliver results. If you can’t get your project done you won’t be considered valuable. I would argue against “take work off your mentors plate”. If you get your project done and accomplish your stretch goals you’ll be in a good position.
At Amazon just figure out ways to connect everything you're doing to the leadership principles and you'll be ok. Prerequisites also include a basic level of intelligence and coding ability, but I assume you'll be ok on those.
Network, make friends and show ppl you are hard working and a do’er. Add those ppl to LinkedIn and ask them to endorse you or write a review. They will be useful in the future if you need referrals and job leads. What I found to success is to have someone that will pull you along. Having a manager that trusts you and want to promote you is key. If that person gets advanced and moves on, they will want to bring you with them.
The bar isn’t very high right now. Just do your best.
Finish your project and stay ahead of your work. Don't wait to ask questions ever. And drive your 1 on 1s
Whatever others mentioned, plus, get constant feedback from your mentor and manager. If there are any areas of improvement you can work and improve on them from the start.
Be respectful. Show some basic level of etiquettes. Keep your mouth shut if you can't talk good stuff. May god pour some sense in a useless fellow like you
Ok I get you are an idiot because your name has it anyway
