Currently at Intel Labs with 2 YOE. PhD in ECE. Got job offers from the following places: IBM TJ watson AI hardware (Research position) Facebook Oculus hardware (not Reality labs, product/implementation role) Google Cloud hardware (product/implementation role) Goal: to stay in research as much as possible in future. Any advice? How easy or difficult it is to switch to a research role in Facebook/Google from an implementation role?
I recommend you move to a product role. You will have more chances of career growth. Google is way ahead of others in AI.
That depends on your goal. Once you leave research careers it is really hard to get back as you don't have research to demonstrate during your job offers. You can always go to implementation from a research position.
Guess you joined right after I left IL. I joined a product/implementation role outside. Never regretted it and actually thought it was the best decision as the compensation and visibility are a lot higher. There are still some great hw groups making cutting edge hw products and that also requires a lot of research and quick implementation. In IL, there are just quite a few “researchers” exaggerating their contribution while their assumption was just totally wrong and I got sick of it.
Of course if you want to return to academia someday, the experience in IL would make you a strong candidate.
Are you in optical lab? If yes, you can get a lot better TC within Intel.
It will always keep getting difficult to move from implementation to research .. With every passing year in implementation, you're virtually closing door for your research career.. it is just logical .. On the other hand - it's easier to go to implement from research
They didn’t teach the difference between “advice” and “advise” in your PhD program?
Google. Deep pocket with deeper desire to extract the best out of you. So if you have strong research inclination, they will work with you to figure out how to make it happen
Facebook or Google, don't touch IBM
Try out the big blue. If you don't like it there, you can always switch later.
Get a short stint at F or G and then move to Watson - to not have only the older tech companies on the resume. I would think Watson could be the most viable, long term research position.

What's the TC for research in HW?
TC isn't that important to me, but it's around 190 (no RSUs)
Do you know what band IBM is offering you?
