I am becoming 31 years old and I want to make career switch to Tech. Will my age become an issue of joining the big-Tech firms? Do they care more on how well you do on LeetCode or HackerRank? Here're my background: I held a Non-CS engineering master degree from a public school in US. I possessed limited coding knowledge with Python, Matlab and javascript. Originally, I plan to join Hackreactor and start out as a full-stack engineer in NYC. I want to apply for apprentice program in tech firms afterwards, like Airbnb or LinkedIn. But judging from today's situation, the plan got delayed and I may apply for Georgia tech's online master, starting next Spring, instead. In case I can't find a job right out of bootcamp. Could anyone offer some opinion? #tech #career #apprenticeship #airbnb #fang
Yeah, same comment as Uber, you will survive your 30 year age. It would be a concern in 10 to 20 years, but you are fine for now.
I will suggest to complete the masters . It is not a easy task. The drop out rate is way higher like more than 40 percent .Just check it out . I will suggest to do in some 2nd tier schools . My friend dropped out from GTech OMCS and another one from UIUC . I don’t worry about age . Completing MS from these top schools is very difficult .
Focus and complete the Masters program and you are fine .
Yes there is bias but it's in your favor. Also try to look young
I’m seeing the bias in your favor. There are also plenty of companies that aren’t about hiring young, cheap labor.
This is my biggest fear about switching but I’ve been told it’s not as bad as you think. But best of luck! 28 year old non-CS engineering masters holder here as well!
There is an age bias in tech. But I would say at around 50 (legally you can file for ageism at 45). In your 30’s you’re more than fine! Best of luck to you and keep at it :) !!
+1. 30s is not too late to start. Not so sure about 50s, LOL
