Hi all,

First post here on Blind. I’m about 10 years into my career and have been working for a growth stage tech company building out the FP&A function for about a year. For a couple of reasons, this role isn’t looking like one I want to continue (boss and co-workers very happy with me but the feeling isn’t mutual.) TC ~200k.

I’d love to jump into a larger tech company but I’m concerned about breaking in. Went to a not at all known state university, did mostly manufacturing prior to this role (but love tech.) Ideal role is a senior manager at Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc but totally open to other large companies. I’d like to get back into a large relatively stable org (1000+ employees) and fine with lateral move on comp etc.

What should I be doing at this stage? Any recommendations?

Senior Manager absolutely not going to happen at Apple given the profile you described.

I know a big 4 director who came in as a manager, mostly seems like we hire a lot of people as SFA and managers/senior managers have long tenures or get promoted into that role.

You may find your experience aligns better with a manager/L5 level, but your comp could probably be the same or more than current tc. So, my advise is to stay open to different levels.

This is correct, apply for manager or SFA roles where you would be aiming to move into manager quickly.

Either way, if you're in the bay area total comp should be similiar to 200k or higher.

Don’t apply for senior manager roles, at Amazon, you would be a finance manager at most, maybe SFA title

At Amazon you might be more aligned with SFA (L6) or FM (L6.5), depending on your ability to demonstrate your impact in your loop.

I’m a FM with 10+ years of experience. When compared to other (non-faang) companies, I would likely be a high sr manager or director.
