Seeing a few of these of interest on their website now. I'm not actively looking and like my current situation... but that's also when I'm most marketable and have least to lose. These are the only jobs I've seen that have piqued my interest in quite a while. Most curious how the broader org is set up. I can intuit what the difference between the Data Science tracks (Analytics, Machine Learning, Foundation, and Inference) from the titles, but the JDs are all pretty similar. Curious how the different tracks work with one another (if at all) and with their business partners. Are Analytics-track Data Scientist are just over-titled dashboard monkeys or do they get to some interesting investigative and strategic work? TC baselines would be great as well. Other topics of interest are: * General culture and morale? I know this is highly team/manager specific, but wondering if you broadly respect people you've worked with. * Paternity? I'm seeing 10 weeks for non-birth parents, not sure if this is up to date. Kids are on the medium-term (1-2 years) horizon, and 20 weeks paternity at Twitter would be tough to give up. * PTO policy? Wife and I make healthy use of unlimited PTO (4-5 weeks) as DINKs (double-income-no-kids), but I'm sure babies will toss a grenade on that. In that case, I might prefer to just accrue and get paid out on it. Current TC ~$190k, Senior Data Analyst with 5 YOE. Edit and Follow up: I applied over the weekend and got a no thanks email midweek. Surprised they didn't at least send me a take home, but like I said, I like my current situation so not terribly torn up about it.
I haven’t been able to find much on blind or anywhere online about Airbnb DS in terms of the interview difficulty/total comp. There is a few older threads that have some negative sentiment, but we are talking 1-2 years ago and a lot can change in that time frame. Mostly people were saying DS is analytics heavy at Airbnb and includes some data engineering, and the machine learning problems are pretty limited. They are clearly hiring like crazy right now. Following this thread in case someone from Airbnb has more insight. Also - that’s a pretty good tc for a data analyst. Is that standard for Twitter and what about just trying to get a ds job there?
I honestly couldn't speak to broader Twitter, my team is embedded and reports directly into a commercial org run mostly independently of Twitter day-to-day (acquisition). We're very siloed from "mainstream" Twitter. I get the sense my pay is higher than what a typical senior IC data analyst would make at Twitter, but I'm basing that off imperfect data sources (Glassdoor and the like). My sense is the DS org here is much more hardcore quant/eng heavy and probably not a fit for my skillset and what I want to do. I just want to make sure the Analytics DS roles aren't just glorified Business Analyst roles (which I'm guessing not, since there's also an open "Analytics and Insights, Senior Analyst" role).
I don’t know how much different a glorified BA is from data scientist analytics roles in general. It’s all the same stuff for the most part. It’s just DS will pay way more. I guess if you mean doing reporting all day versus doing exploratory analysis type work.
Follow up: I applied over the weekend and got a no thanks email midweek. Surprised they didn't at least send me a take home, but like I said, I like my current situation so not terribly torn up about it.
Hey op thanks for update. I also was not able to get a call back despite referral + relevant experience; Regarding twitter, was your tc $190k when you joined as a senior analyst? If so mind sharing breakdown and yoe when joining?
More like $183k when I started. Don't feel comfortable sharing breakdown here but overwhelmingly base and bonus, less than 5% of my comp is equity grant (unless you count ESPP). I started with about 4 YOE (after transitioning from another non-tech career) but got bumped to a higher level (typically 6-8 years experience) on the back of good interview performance, a strong internal referral from a senior manager in the org, and good references.

How prestigious is databricks?
Not sure cuz I was rejected after I had submitted a takehome assessment, they said if I pass that then it’s straight to onsite. If youre curious about their takehome then you can PM me. Im also switching very soon from a sr analyst to DS2 - analytics at one of the unicorns, obv not airbnb, and wanted to get a general insights about the data team org structure. Mind sharing how it is at Twitter? Do you mostly just serve PMs on dashboards and adhocs that do not fully involve legit ML implementation? I hated that as an analyst, thus switching.
Can’t speak to broader Twitter, I would in an embedded analytics team within a commercial unit and don’t report into the central Data Science org. My sense is it’s super team specific. Even on my team we have folks who’re very technical and some who work exclusively in Excel. I do no ML and work mostly in various flavors of SQL and Python (couple of my coworkers are big R advocates, everyone has their own workflow). My role is part ad hoc data pulls and dashboarding, part experimental design and analysis, part strategic narrative. I find the last two a lot more interesting than the first, and thankfully that’s where the bulk of my time has been going. On the Airbnb DS spectrum, I suspect I’d be a good fit for Analytics and Inference roles, and a very, very poor fit for ML and Foundation.
OP can I ping you for Airbnb take home challenge?
