Moving to CA/ SFO for a job with airbnb and I am considering renting a place in San Rafael. Is my commute time to / from Airbnb HQ going to be insane? Should I look somewhere else? If so, would greatly appreciate any recommendations, as I do not know much about SFO. Thank you!
Congratulations, if you want to enjoy social life, I'd definitely recommend living closer like Oakland or Berkeley. Are you driving? If so, you will be going in the direction of traffic and it will be hell driving back when you are tired from work. SF has a lot to offer and the commute time adds up real fast. Try to live in the city of you can to get the best of work and life. It can be a bit expensive but worth it. Do you have a family?
Thank you! Yes, I was planning to drive. Honestly, I am not much for the typical social life, prefer hiking and nature. That is why I was considering San Rafael. It is just my doggie and I, no other family. If you don’t mind me asking, what would I be looking at in terms of driving back - 60, 90 minutes or longer? Thank you very much for your help!
It really depends on the day and the accidents. Don’t underestimate the drive, it’s brutal. Just getting to an on-ramp can be 20-30 minutes in a few blocks on the wrong day.
San Rafael is definitely pretty and if you want you can stay close to presidio in the city which has a lot of natural beauty and some hiking spots. Your commute time will be about an hour. If there is a collision, can be 90 minutes.
Thank you very much for your kindness in replying to all my many questions!
You're welcome. Hope you enjoy Airbnb.
Gotcha. Definitely check out Fairfax and Tocaloma.
Thank you!
You can take one of the ferries from Sausalito if you are coming from San Rafael. The ferry building is a bit of a hike from Airbnb but you can Lyft or bike. You can buy the ferry tickets with pretax commute fsa. The ferry is really the best way to commute in the Bay Area. I wouldn’t drive in San Francisco at all. At peak commute it would take you probably an hour just to get onto the highway from downtown.
Thank you very much for the info! Much appreciated!
Yup Marin county is a great place to live. If you can afford it i think Sausalito or tiburon are great places to live. Both have ferries that take less than half an hour to the city and they are both by the water and very pretty. Lots of tourists actually bike across the Golden Gate Bridge and take the ferry back. San Rafael is not far, though. Welcome to the Bay Area and good luck. If you ever get tired of Airbnb you can always come to salesforce. We are within walking distance of the ferry and bart. Lots of coworkers take the ferry.
If you want easy outdoor activity with same commute options, I highly suggest somewhere in east bay (Oakland, Berkeley) rather than north bay (San Rafael). East bay hills will give you enough weekday morning or after work options for running, bicycling, or hiking. Weekend options can be had at any part of the bay. Driving commute is usually not a viable option, as there’s no parking around Airbnb SF. BART or ferry from the east bay, combined with bicycling or walking is the best option. (40-60 minutes) Congratulations, I hope you have fun here!
Thank you very much! I appreciate your advice!

Best LCOL or MCOL city?
I always thought AirBnB should have company housing for their employees.
