Title says it. Am borderline HV/TT at Amazon and know I’m up for promo in Q1 (Seattle location). Have opportunities at Airbnb and DocuSign for equivalent and likely even higher level roles in both but don’t yet know comp offering, just know it’ll be higher than anything the promo will give me at Amazon (likely 50k+). Factoring in market conditions and a possible downturn and their product offerings, which would you choose?
Ya what’s great about Airbnb
It’s not amazon 😢
There are two other choices than Amazon. So, again why so much love for Airbnb (honest question)? Looking for data points to help in decision making.
Better design + better viability than docu-lame
Is this by experience or someone you knows experience or simply through research of systems? I ask because you disparage DocuSign’s name so I wonder if there is a reason
Amazon WLB sucks, DocuSign sounds lethargic
Which level for the promo? If you are L6 or above, stay. L6 or above is equally or more impressive compared to other FANGs
Which location? Seattle? Interesting problems, room for growth, strong tech leadership, talented co workers, great work life balance, close knit culture, top tier pay (tech), new senior leadership from Google (CTO), Amazon (President is Homes, CFO ), and Instagram (Product).
Promo is to L7. Also should clarify I’m not an engineer but I’m more interested in the culture, interesting work, better WLB and much better comp. same things engineers look at.
And yes, Seattle
Seattle office will likely double in size and having leaders like yourself locally can position you well. Might involve travel to SF often to keep teams connected. L7 Amazon would be equivalent to L6/G10 here.
And what does L6/G10 comp look like generally? In talking to them, they did say the Seattle office needs to grow to over 300 in the next year or so. Been through that kind of growth many times.
I can’t speak for non tech. Generally you have base, initial grant (4 years) and sign on. Equity vests per quarter without cliff. Removed for 2019 and beyond. Refreshers which are about 25% of your grant in value (not units). Then there’s cash bonus which for G10 should be 20% of salary and performance based. I would estimate your base starting around $220k or more. TC in tech for G10 runs around $450k. Also worth noting that bands get wider the higher up you go in level so YMMV depending on experience and interview performance.

Lot of votes for Airbnb, let’s see some reasons other than name recognition or first choice on the list.
Free food, great comp, good WLB and of all the places I've had onsites so far (Google, Twitter, Airbnb, Square, Uber, Bloomberg and others), the people at Airbnb looked happiest and least stressed. Brand is superior to Amazon for sure, in the eyes of anyone in Silicon Valley including practically all hiring managers and recruiters. Amazon is known as a less desirable place to work and thus generally has a lower hiring bar.
Most of that sounds good, and yes in the valley Amazon’s brand is worse but I’m thinking the market brand. Amazon is second to almost nobody but they sit in different markets anyways. Perks/benefits are for sure better at DocuSign and Airbnb, but what about Airbnb comp package? How is that broken out? TC is 300+ today and would need to much higher base, bonus and a lot of options to make it worth the move. Think that is likely? The thought of a 2019 or 2020 IPO is certainly enticing as well
