Airbnb interview

After 2 rounds of phone interview with Airbnb, HR sent that “Unfortunately, your qualifications are not a match for the role at this time”. I am confused if it is really because the role didn’t match or the 2nd interview didn’t go well. HR didn’t respond when asked for feedback. I was able to come up with optimal solution with no hints. Also, compiled and tested code for various test cases. Interviewer was also happy. Did anyone had a similar experience?

I guess either interviewers stabbed u in the back or the hiring manager changed their mind.

Yeah me too! Mine was a data science role and I think I screwed up in behavioral:(

Was your behavioral the 3rd interview onsite after the phone interviews?

Could be the req was filled by another candidate.

I just don't get this...you're a company providing a consumer product, you interview someone and they have a bad experience, why would this person ever do business with you afterwards? I think companies should care about giving better feedback and at least trying to keep candidates feeling positive about the company.

I feel the same. Never had such an experience with any other company. Everyone provides at least some feedback.

+1 but remember that interviewees are maybe less than 0.1% of all customers that they are pleasing.

Not at Airbnb, but I had an experience as an interviewer rejecting someone even though he came up with optimal solution to the problem. (Onsite) I was with another shadow interviewer. As the candidate was going through his thought process, we suggested somewhat better way (still same runtime complexity tho) but he literally said no I don’t want that way I will go with my solution. We were okay with it, but we both felt that the candidate was quite stubborn, maybe arrogant in some way that we don’t want to work with this guy. Next interviewer was 5 min late. The interviewer asked him if he needs time for restroom or water, but the candidate said, “no, you are 5 min late. Let’s go straight to the question so that I can have enough time to solve”. It was not just three of us. All of the other interviewers feedback was like this. “He seems technically very strong, but I wouldn’t want to work with this guy” In cases like this, I don’t think HR will give you honest feedback. You may not remember everything you said. Even if you didn’t say anything wrong, bad decisions can be made.

Totally agree with post. This applies both ways though. I decided not to join companies based on the interviewer interaction. I seriously didn't wanted to work with those folks. It's a two way street - even interviewees are evaluating the interviewer

Airbnb lli1ilii Jun 13, 2019

+1 that it is not one way. I also have declined an offer from a company for the same reason.

Almost every time recruiters don't tell you why, it's because of behavior.

Clearstream.TV beedangs Jun 14, 2019

Does amazon provide feedback? I asked the recruiter and she said company policy says she can’t provide any. Was she lying?

Airbnb why-though Jun 20, 2019

Have you interviewed before? That’s a generic rejection email. Unfortunately the interview process is arbitrary at times and good candidates are lost. They probably won’t give you specifics on the rejection because it opens us up to litigation. Other companies are the same

Oracle ihba OP Jun 22, 2019

I have interviewed before. Everyone provides at least minimal feedback like you didn’t do well in system design, your code was not optimal, etc. I know that no one gives detailed feedback.
