They are hiring all sorts of roles right now in San Mateo - the Glassdoor reviews are pretty ugly on comp and culture but not sure if they are just trolls. Anybody have info on what it's like to work for US Alibaba?
I heard from multiple people, if you aren’t Chinese don’t even try...
Ni howdy!
You will spend at least 30% of your time in Hangzhou, China for either training or coworker with your team there. As Ali San Mateo office hires pretty much only senior/experienced level Everyone would be expected to lead a remote team, big or small, in China as tech lead. It’s really hard for non Chinese speaker to fit into any engineering role there. Note that this is what I heard from a friend in Alipay in San Mateo office, but Ali cloud won’t be too much different I assume.
They really work hard. I just feel like it’s different. At Microsoft, i don’t think people work as hard. We talk about kids and family too much. At ali, i don’t think anyone cares that you have kids or family. It’s a pure meritocracy. You can be promoted faster if you’re good but your life is work. You can be 28 or 29 year old 65 or 66, but your life is work. I also think going back to us tech companies is hard.
Chinese workshop. Stay away. rife with politics and plenty of drama. My friends worked in some other Chinese centric firms and they were out within 6 months. Those places suck
@Bcksob you meant sweatshop instead of workshop
They only hire those from big company, you need pour out all you know and done at previous company and create several class to let your knowledge be shared as much as possible, another big job is referring the new candidates to company. So above the two big keys are the reasons if they hire you. After then, you need sacrifice most of your personal time to help them beat google amazon and transport the Chinese insane working culture into US, if you exhaust all your precious resource become not useful anymore, it will become your last day here. Here also follow the bottom-out kpi, every team here it will eliminate one or two person even though they all do a very very good job, no excuse, you bottom you go. Bottom or not are all decided by your directly boss only! so pls apple-polish your boss lol.
Does Alibaba really fire people so aggressively? Too early days for that isn’t it? Or, maybe you are a lazy employee and vindictive? To JRIY67: I don’t know about Alibaba, but I think working for most Chinese business or in china is difficult in general. If you have no such experience (or strong language and/or cultural knowledge), you will get a lot of big surprises. Perhaps a good learning experience for a couple years, but probably no work satisfaction..
