Whenever I make a decision, I feel like I made the wrong decision and will suffer the consequences.
I work at a small SAAS company with a handful of clients, we have been around for less than a decade. Company is run by my college professor and most of us are alum but the company has always been on precarious grounds. To help me out, they started my green card process and we were 3 months away from filing PERM but I got a SDE 2 position at Microsoft so I signed.
I thought it's better for career and for job security.
Unfortunately as my msft start date is coming up, I am thinking that if recession hits and we have layoffs everywhere, msft is not going to be an exception.
I feel like because my previous employer was so small, they may have tried to help me even if we had financial trouble but large corporations don't care.

I am not sure if my thinking is correct. I think had I not joined msft I would still live in fear of losing my job and deportation too...

    Here is a story for u :
A man had a son whom he adored. He always tried to make his son happy . So , when the son asked for a horse - he bought him one. His son was very happy , he learnt excellent horse riding and all the kids in the village were jealous of his son. The man was proud about his decision to buy him a horse.
Then , one day , after the boy grew into a teenager , he fell off the horse and broke his leg. His leg was permanently damaged and he got a limp for life. All the villagers and the dad thought - It was a bad decision to buy a horse.
A few more years passed - the country that they lived in went to war with a neighboring country. All fit young men were forced to be part of the army. And most of these young men who went to fight were lucky to come back alive. Most families were devastated to be sending their sons off - without knowing if they will ever see them again.
Now this man’s son - since he had a limp - was not accepted by the army. The man thanked his lucky stars . He once again believed - it was the best decision to have bought his son a horse.
A few more years later - in an unfortunate accident , the son was thrown off the horse’s back and died. The man was totally depressed and cursed himself for buying him that wretched horse.

Moral of the story : It was the same decision , which , turned out to be good and bad at different points in the man’s life.
Every time, make a decision by taking all the relative parameters into consideration. Only time will tell you if it is a good one or bad one. But - NEVER look back once the decision is made.

  • There is no crystal ball. Living with uncertainty is part of life. I understand it’s difficult (I was on visa for ~13 years). Ultimately, you can’t worry about things you cannot control. You made a good decision that was best for you at the time. Don’t doubt yourself and just be the best person you can in your next role! Good luck.

I think it would be scarier to be at a small SaaS company with little to no cash reserve during a recession..
