Currently working at Yahoo since 2 years straight out of MS in CS. Have been mostly working on building and enhancing webservices in Java, with maybe 10% of Big data work. Big data work was good, but I learned the most at those web services. It has truly enhanced my Computer Science concepts. I enjoyed working on solving Garbage Collection problems, looking at objects, Focus on Web service load test and etc. I now have a job offer from another company where the focus will be more on networking, cloud infra, partial devops, deploying pipelines and the scale of things is higher too. I cant decide if taking that job will enhance my profile? Are these things inline with a deep career in Soft Engg? I wont get any exposure to ML, BigData (have little interest), but in todays world, is it safe to stay away from ML? Will this limit my profile/ domain? Too early in my career to decide which domain I should go deep in. #softwareadvice #backend #career
ML is super duper overrated and such a small part of development. You’ll be fine without it
I haven't succeeded in your quest, but my failures lead me to believe that success depends on the teams and opportunities you encounter. You told us nothing about the team and opportunities in the job offer you mentioned. So my guess is that's it's a dead end, but maybe you will get lucky.
I don’t want to say anything about the team as the new team as well old team might be reading this :p
Get the fuck out of yahoo
Yes but how to decide where else should I go? Is the kind of work I described above good to have skills?
