I was a Product Manager at Cisco for majority of my 13 years.
The one key thing I learned after leaving and spending some time looking plus hoping to relocate is that a Product Manager is 'mostly' indignant to the valley bay area. If you are ever looking outside it can be hard for other companies to understand what your last role and responsibilities were . its all good locally though.
Most product manager had marketing and/or mba backgrounds, though I found the role more like a mix of program management and project management with deep product knowledge . If Its a real product management you will have direct revenue responsibility and recognition . Look for that.

  • Every company is different. Many call completely different roles "product managers".
Interview process varies company to company.

  • May be interchangeable with the Agile Product Owner role...... Easiest way for me to describe it is a business analyst that thinks like a manager. Expect interviews to lead you down a path for some problem, but don't be afraid to take free reign to create appropriate solutions. I say appropriate, because no telling which companies want to throw trick questions, or slide by some tricky conditions when the introduction is made.
