Hi all, Ive recently moved to USA/new york and joined UN in corporate services at officer / office manager level. Im amazed and shocked to see the salary structure and specially a huge difference between non-profit and corporate sector. i have more than 10 years of experience working with foreign delegations mainly in operations management. i have been managing big departments with nation-wide multiple big projects however the salaries in UN and almost in all foreign diplomatic missions are extremely low. Im getting almost $60k per year that too before the taxes and we are not exempted from the tax. similarly the head of our department hardly gets around 100k which is peanuts when living/working in new york. plus there is hardly 5% increase per year with almost no additional benefits or bonuses. The corporate sector gets almost double for what we are getting in non-profit sector. how easy is it for me to move to corporate sector specially bigger firms like amazon, google, facebook etc. what route should i take? grateful for your advise.
You can either do good or destroy democracy at fb.
At your experience, many useless suckers in such companies are making 400k+.. From my experience, most of them have below average talent, atleast at Amazon. apply to relevant positions then quit.
Thanks guys. Don’t you think my move to corporate sector is difficult considering i only have diplomatic missions/non profit experience which is not relevant?.
Do you have LinkedIn? If so, are you getting constant recruiter spam from these major tech companies?
Actually I don’t (deleted my account) :(. I was working at quite senior level in my country and now joined at quite lower level so i was bit embarrassed to publicly declare that. I was thinking maybe once I’m on the same level then I’ll recreate my linkedinn profile.
Nonprofits and public sector tend to come with much cushier benefits. Company resources to use, more comfortable working conditions, and of course you usually get some level of social status you can use to lord over other people Of course I don't care for all that so I will echo what everyone else said: quit, and go somewhere that pays you what you're worth
Most salaries you see here are only within large technology companies. It's not true for 95% of the population. That being said, such large tech companies do hire people under PR, which could be a sweet spot for you. From what I understand even those business roles will not pay you the astronomical high salaries that engineers here get
This.....Blind can be misleading, that said 60K in NYC with your YOE seems super low, go private sector...
Dm me for referral
