I have 2 offers: Both in NYC. The work for both companies has to do with cloud services (GS has an internal cloud). Here are the numbers: AWS (SDE2) - TC $260k; 173.5k base, year 1 bonus 81k, year 2 bonus 60k, 97 RSUs GS (VP) - TC $250k; 180k base, 70k bonus Which should I choose? Current TC $175k Edit: So another question is, is it worth it to go to AWS and bust my ass to get to SDE3? Obviously it's worth it to be great at your job, but there's a risk of putting a lot of effort into getting a promotion that is not necessarily under your control and you getting shorted out if you don't get it.
How does GS bonus work? When do you get 70K?
Amazon because the RSUs will be worth more in the future.
Amazon.. bonus is highly variant and u might even get zero!
Future value of being a VP at Goldman + bonus * probability of bonus > amazon package
If u want to stay for a year yes!! Else those numbers will never tie up.
Goldman
Maybe start a poll? I think GS > amazon
Got it, thanks
How many years experience have you got? Curious as I applied and was told they would recruit me at associate level.
After year 1, odds are against you to make 70k bonus. Here is why. As a VP, you will most likely be reporting to a manager who is VP and you will be stack ranked against him. 70k is Q1/Q2 level VP bonus. So likely you should be quartiled higher/same level as your manager. At VP the expectation, is you will manage team perception of you(politics), in addition to driving decision/deliverables.
Can you explain that? How does stack ranking work and how do bonuses after year 1 work?
Your TC(patc) will usually only increase if you are in top half(Q1/Q2). For the rest it will either remain flat or go down, usually. About 70% of GS is VP. Usually people who are Q1 VP for a few years get a shot at MD title and very few get cross ruffled and get the title. The rest stay and continue to be Q1/Q2 VPs (some leave). A Q1/Q2 VP will be told what are the new frontier, business want to target, he will understand what a viable product on street will look like, come up with a plan/project to get there, get the relevant teams buy in on plan and deliver those projects on time.
Lol didnt you post on Reddit? Those lemmings were telling you to go to Goldman.
Yeah I did, isn't making the decision any easier
Just go to AWS
I agree. Don’t take GS unless it’s a top team and you are sure of what you want.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?

Avoid teams with only Chinese or Indians especially with a Chinese/Indian manager
Amazon has better breadth as it is a tech company and you can change teams and it would be easier to move into other faang tier companies later. If you want to remain as a tech guy in the financial services industry GS is better.
