Currently working as Full Stack Developer at IBM, work has been good but recently environment has not been good. Now I have job offer from Amazon AWS from both UI and Backend teams. What would you suggest? In terms of career growth and work life balance?
FEE?
I was in IBM last year. I can’t believe you need to even ask whether you should stay or leave for Amazon...
I agree MSFT vs Amazon is close and depends on multiple factors.
What’s your current TC and what’s the offer breakdown?
I interned at IBM. Would never go back. I would definitely jump ships to AWS.
Currently interning at IBM. How was the transition to Microsoft? Did IBM have any value on your resume?
During Uni, I interned there and another medium size company, along with undergrad research. The transition was pretty seamless, I mean I was only at IBM for the summer, and then was hired at MSFT right after graduation (secured the offer during my last semester). Having IBM definitely helped, as it does have history, and they’re still relevant. I had an offer from them as a SDE in Cloud, but rejected it for MSFT. I would’ve taken it though, had I not been offered a position at MSFT. I would definitely encourage you to apply to teams within IBM, since you’re there as an intern, take advantage of the internal careers portal. If I remember correctly, my current manager received a notification when I applied for a position. He was really cool about it though, and encouraged me to get into the Cloud space. Definitely one of my favorite managers in all my career. I said I would never go back, because a lot of the internal process was very slow and it felt like I was stuck in a dead group. Obviously I was an intern, so my responsibilities were not that difficult compared to an FTE. I am however very grateful for interning there as I believe it helped my resume.
tc or gtfo
My current TC at IBM is 120k at RTP. Downside is that is it. There is no bonus, no stocks nothing. Bad thing at IBM is people are lazy and slow on work but try to take credit of what you do. I know that is somewhat going to be true in many other companies but worst at IBM. I am still negotiating with AWS on my offer.
I say go for it. It provides more perspective. And having IBM on your resume basically guarantees you can find another IBM gig. Bring a towel. Lotta sweat in that shop.
Before choosing WLB, always ask yourself why you need WLB. Do you have kids? Do you have other projects or hobbies? If the benefit of greater WLB just means you can binge more Netflix, there's nothing wrong with instead working 12 hour days at Amazon and earning way more money. But to keep it short, going over to AWS is a no-brainer lol
WLB probably better at IBM. Career AWS, no doubt.
