Amazon AWS vs Oracle OCI

Jul 31, 2019 41 Comments

Oracle OCI - Senior SW
Base - 155k, RSU - 105k/yr, sign-on 15k, TC 260k

Amazon AWS - SDE 1
Base 141k, RSU - 31 shares, sign-on y1- 28k, sign-on y2 - 19k, TC ~= 170k

4 YoE. Both Seattle location.

Amazon seems to be an obvious choice for a lot of people. However, I have heard a lot of good stuff about OCI too.

Which offer to choose? Comparison between work life balance, culture, job satisfaction etc would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Lots of Amazon people at OCI. You’re young, give OCI a shot.

I was actually interviewed for SDE 2. I should've done a bit better. But yea SDE 1 is what they offered me.

    • 100k is a big difference in my opinion. Join OCI and if you don’t like it there, You can try SDE-2 in another 6 months or so and then change

OCI is a sinking ship lol you will constantly worry about layoffs

100k extra is plenty for worrying about layoffs. For OP (I assume mid 20s with no kids), that 100k will stretch over a year if they lay them off. Enough $ for months of LC prep for new job AND a nice long euro trip or something

Amazon is really lowballing you. Go with OCI and if it’s not the best fit, make a move in a year or so.
