Recently transitioned from data analytics (7 YOE) to software engineering (0 YOE). Brand new to software engineering so looking to get mentorship and start with a good foundation while having decent WLB. Need help deciding between offers: Amazon Backend SDE-I (L4) - Team: AWS Honeycode (No code / low code platform) - Seems like one of the good teams at Amazon. Friend recently joined and likes it. - Manager and teammates seem very supportive/understanding. Multiple people recently/up for promotion. - Team and product seems like it has good structure (sprint planning, workload, etc) - Minimal oncall workload - Team has wide range of experience so I’d have mentorship from seniors but also peers that I can relate to. TC: $242K (could probably match Zoox though) Zoox (owned by Amazon) Backend SWE (L4) - Team: Fleet Dispatch - Really smart people (I have imposter syndrome) - Smaller team and company, so need to make sure I have support structure and reasonable expectations since I have no professional SWE experience - Manager seems decent and gives flexibility TC: $278K Also got offers from Twitch, Cisco Meraki, and Netskope but those didn’t seem as appealing. Wanted to see what people think and why.
I have a close friend at Zoox if you want to get more info. He's a smart guy and he's approachable. Lemme know if you wanna find out more.
Fleet and rider ops teams seem pretty solid IMO
I agreed fleet team ppl are decent and smart
Can you share Zoox offer breakdown? I am in a similar situation where I have an L4 offer from Zoox and L5 offer from Amazon as well but can't seem to value the ZARS part accurately to compare them.
Sent you a DM
Can you DM me your offer from zoox? I have to accept an offer in one day. Want to evaluate the offer they’re giving for L5 position.
Zoox gives amazon stock? Also how did you get to final rounds with twitch and zoox with another amazon offer? Wth
Yes Zoox gives Amazon RSU (with a better vesting schedule: 20% / 40% / 40%). I timed Amazon, Twitch, and Zoox so got offers around the same time. They all knew I was in the process with the others. Amazon and Zoox gave offers, while Twitch gave verbal offer but said I would need to pick Twitch over the others before they could give written offer. Twitch said they wouldn’t get into bidding war with Amazon, but could match.
What was your final choice? If it’s honeycode, how is it going there?
I work at AWS Honeycode and maybe we have the same manager. You can DM me the name if you’d like and I can confirm. My experience so far has been terrible at Honeycode. I’ve been in other Amazon orgs and I’ve never seen such two faced people in my life. The product is garbage and they have no direction. There has been massive attrition of the original employees and product managers that started the product. We have new PMs that don’t even know about the functionality. I strongly reccomend to leave. I’m leaving too once I complete my vest. Other orgs I’ve worked at Amazon are far far better. My advice would be to go for the Zoox one cause 1. It sounds cooler than a generic AWS position 2. You make more money. In most teams at Amazon you’ll learn quite a lot especially if you’re new to software engineering. Some teams you learn more, some less. The PIP is something to watch out throughout your time here.
