Amazon Austin or MSFT Redmond
Amazon, Austin, SDE-1 : 181k TC (not AWS) Microsoft, Redmond, L60: 167k TC YOE:2 I read a lot horror stories about amazon here, is true for Austin as well? I heard most bad teams and folks here at blind are from Amazon Seattle and India. I’m quite inclined towards amazon based on TC and Location (Austin got good food, live music and low COL for now) I’m on a visa, single, and want to learn and make some impact, at the same time have fun. If there’s an “Austin based Amazonian” here, I’d highly appreciate some info. Thanks in advance! Edit 1: 7k relocation not included in amazon tc, that makes it approx 188k for first year, and 180ish going forward,if that helps. I am now at amazon. I picked amazon in the poll, coz higher TC and better weather in Austin :) But frankly I have very little data to give any meaningful advice. I think any of those offers would work. Also each city/suburb has its charm - depends on what you like.
Can confirm even Amazon Austin is terrible. Why do you assume it would be different?
Which org/ team are you in? If you don’t mind. Can you elaborate on terrible? I have a friend who worked in Austin office, told me it was laid back compared to others. He moved to another location due to visa stuff, and however this was 2-3 years ago.

If you got to Msft you will have time to leetcode. If you go to amazon you won’t have time to leetcode
I’d choose Microsoft just because it’s in PNW as I think the weather is much nicer here than in Austin. But 181k in Austin will go a lot farther than 167k in Redmond.

Amazon Austin here and lived in Seattle but can't speak to MSFT or Redmond. Amazon ATX definitely leans more chill compared to rest of Amazon but like everywhere else there's bad teams. Career growth you'll be better off in Seattle area. In terms of "fun" it depends on your definition. I'd imagine Redmond is much more suburban and at least if you wanted more of a city life it's more doable in Austin.
Thank you! Really appreciate the info! Yeah, did some digging on the amazon team in Austin, seems like it’s one of the good managers. He was super nice when I spoke to him as well. By “fun” I mean things to check out, meeting new folks etc. I’m very much into live music, Austin has a good reputation for that.
One of the good things about Amazon is you can live in Austin for a couple years and just internal transfer to different cities with ease if you want to try something else out.
Depends on team tbh. Amzn is usually good for career growth and you can switch teams easily unlike msft
