They only do a background check through your SSN. They rarely call the previous employers. Mine was done in a day.

No amazon will not contact your old employers except only to check that you worked there. Will not ask for recommendations
They asked me for 2-3 references which I provided but they never contacted. Both were from a company I left over 18 months before taking the job
They contacted your employer, my job is in AWS. Cloud based.
