Hi all, I need help evaluating this offer from aws. Current TC: 107k, 3.5 YOE at Booz Allen AWS Bie offer: 118k base, 65k bonus, 80k rsu (TC ~157k) I said I was hoping for around 200k since the median for L5 data science is above that but recruiter said that’s out of band for BIE. I already interviewed for a senior data science position with them and they “did not like my depth of knowledge” but I passed breadth and bar raiser so they contacted me for small loop when this position opened. I’m leading a team doing decent ML work, I feel like this would be almost a step down but better name on my resume. I’m also interviewing with Kit Check for a senior data scientist position but not far along yet. Any advice is appreciated (if I switch from BIE to data science internal will my salary increase)?
You can try to get an internal transfer to DS but it could take a couple of years
The team I would work for has 3 data scientists and one applied scientist - I would be the only BIE. Does this make any difference? The hiring manager said I could transfer within a year if I wanted. Would that change my salary or is it just a title change?
Yeah that matters alot. Just communicate to your manager that you want to get good at the role you are doing (BIE), but would also like to be getting trained to be a DS since that is the career trajectory you are looking for.
I started Amazon as BIE L5 last year with almost the same TC. After 1 year I transferred to a DE role and got a bump to 185k TC
Awesome thanks for the info! Was BIE an ok job? How difficult was it to transfer and when you transferred do you negotiate an entire new comp?
The job can have a lot of different roles depending on the team. Some BIE are Excel monkeys while some do actual development and build ETL pipelines. All will involve working with stakeholders to create and report metrics. The job description will indicate the direction in which the role will lean. My experience at Amazon has been very positive. Always learning, always encouraged to push the bar higher. I was able to get exposed to a lot of AWS data tools like redshift, glue, s3, lake formation, Athena. You can even dive into machine learning and DS if you want to. No team will deny you the opportunity to make improvements using data science and in return, you'll get the experience you need to move into a DS role.
BIE is miles apart from data scientist. One has consulting background while the other is usually phd grad with some experience
I saw most Microsoft positions for DS asked for masters or phd, but that’s not the case for Amazon (maybe that aligns more with applied scientist?) I do have physics math and comp sci background
@microsoft, that’s false. You’re thinking of Applied Scientist/Research Scientist for Amazon
I chatted with kitcheck before, they tc is on the low end. I don't think they'll beat Amazon.
Hey I’m more concerned with impactful work and career progression than TC, do you think the title / work would help me get a better future job vs amazons name on my resume?
If you can internal transfer at aws, then Amazon is the way to go. I don't do data so you'll know better than me, but my concern with bi is that I'll be stuck as a dashboard monkey, and my internal networking skill isn't good enough for me to switch to ds, so in that sense, I'd go for kit just for the title so I can jump out in a year. Another concern I had with kit is that everyone I talked to seemed stress. I did not want to go into a messy work environment. If you already have ds knowledge from booz, you can probably do an external jump somewhere else if you can't get an internal transfer. This would make the title at kitcheck useless.
Is this an L5 BIE we're talking about? I'm an L6 non-tech progam manager (promoted from L5) making 165k TC. I really need to switch to something technical.
Yes this is L5 BIE. Congrats on your promotion!
Yeah congrats to me for being promoted from 🥜 to slightly more 🥜
What's your current role at Booz Allen?
My admin level is associate and internal job family is machine learning engineer
Op, I just messaged u
For anyone interested, they increased the base slightly and dropped the bonus / rsu even more slightly; I accepted today. Total comp is around 161k
Your friend maybe was put at l6? I discussed promotions/other job profiles with the hiring manager which both options seemed to comp around 200-220k average (he said he couldn’t reveal specifics to me).
Hi OP. Can I dm you to know more about your interview experience? I have a L5 BIE onsite in next few days.

Sounds like all my friends that got in to amazon - had to take a down lvl
So I don’t think it’s a down level - the data science position I interviewed for was probably L5 since I have 3.5 YOE - I don’t really know how BIE vs DS is at Amazon tho. Seems like the band is much lower at the very least
