I had an on-site last week for DE in Seattle on Thursday. Friday I was called saying the team loved me but thought my skill set would be much better for BIE. I have a call Monday with the manager to answer my questions then an offer... any thoughts? Also what’s the band differences between L5/L6 for both roles? Mostly interested in the base but stock/sign on/relocation as well? What would be worthwhile to move from the bay to Seattle with my current TC: 180 Bay Area with 4 YOE?
I’d say take the BIE position and in a few months you can get repositioned as DE by asking for projects focusing on the backend work.
Don’t take BIE. They are lowballing you. Better to start with right title than switching later.
I agree
Push for L6 BIE. It's easier to go from L6 bie to de compared to going from l5 to l6 de.
BI is not treated as tech family in most teams. Some of the BI teams I work with are limited to front end dashboarding. Talk to the HM before you get into it
Much appreciated !
OP check dm. Reply when u get a chance.
Don’t take BIE. It is non tech at Amazon and much lower pay band and lower respect. DE is technical, higher pay band and much respected. PM me for more details.
The most important thing is the team you’ll be joining and what tasks are they doing. I’ve seen DEs being hired in non tech teams doing business analyst work. I’ve also seen BIE doing more engineering/infra work. The job role is important and the difference is well documented in HR guidelines. But it would be hard to grow and transition if you only hold the title. Make sure you get both (title and tasks). As far as growth, some DEs become analytics managers or sdm (rarely). Most BIEs turn into analytics managers or pm managers. I would take it to get your foot in the door, but be vocal about your interests and aspirations to prepare for your internal transition...
Thanks for the advice. The manager seems very interested in helping move me any direction I would like to go.
Hi Autodesk, Did you end up taking the BIE role? Asking cause I have an interview coming up for a Sr BIE role in Seattle and would be interested in knowing what you decided and why?
Curious. Which team are u looking at? Can u share the job Id. Pls pm me. I am one of the hiring managers
This was aws. Im waiting hear about amazon.com now. I dont have a job Id tho. I can pm u though? I ended up not taking the first one due to start date issues. Waiting to see if anything else opens up @kLPV68
Take the BIE but ask has the manager changed BIE’s to DE’s before. Better yet ping me..

What is your position currently? Are you currently a business intelligence engineer or data engineer? I wouldnt drop to BIE from DE if you are already DE, even if it is FAANG
I’m a DE at Autodesk currently. It’s the BI focused team so I a hunch that’s why but still skeptical. Any particular reason you wouldn’t change?
I don’t like dropping titles that are typically more senior than what i would be going to. I’m not at Amazon so maybe their BIE is more technical, but I’m not sure about that. What is your current tech stack and work focused on? Amazing Music is hiring DE in SF btw.
