Interviewed for WDE II, got down leveled to WDE I during the phone screen. The phone screen went well, and mostly covered vanilla JS and CSS. I’m just confused on how the interview presented enough data to down level? I’m getting on-sites at higher levels at large companies in the Bay Area. Either way, I want to work at Amazon. Any insight? YOE: 5 TC: 120 (low COL state)
Amazon always down levels unless you come from a similar or better company (per their perception). Try to get other offers and negotiate.
Thanks for the advice.
WDE gets less pay than SDE, if possible, try get a FEE role (Front End Engineer) it is the new role and has the same comp structure as SDE
Lol did you read the post?
I did. I was a WDE2 in Amazon, I left because my manager wouldn't let me convert to FEE. Like others said, Amazon down level hard. You have to totally nailed all interviewing round to get a same level offer. However, WDE1 to WDE2 promotion is quite easy. I had done it in 1.5 years. I have a friend did that in 1 year (one full review cycle)
If the tech side of the interview only covered the basics, there's a chance that your downlevel is due to how you did on behavioral and/or previous scope/experience. It was judged that throwing you out there as a WDE-II wasn't setting you up for success. If you really want to work for Amazon and the offered comp works for you I'd say take it and quickly get promoted to WDE-II by proving yourself on the LPs.
Good to hear, thanks.
Also, the team that I was interviewing for needs some WDE II before I can join. Is there a possibility I can be “forgotten”?
