Recently had onsite interview with Amazon. Apart of LP questions there were: 1) Leetcode easy, unfortunately I've started panicing and was not able to provide the solution, until interviewer said the solution out loud. Coded successfully, but I think he had a follow-up question, since the question was too easy. 2) Question from top 50 Amazon. Marked as hard, but looks more like medium. I stuck in the middle of writing the code, after few hints - coded successfully. 3) Design round. Provided multiple solutions, explaining pros and cons. Interviewer looked satisfied, and said that he would solve the problem in the same way. The interviewer was a senior engineer, while previous two were engineers. 4) Interview with a manager. Coded successfully without any hints. Interviewer mentioned that my solution is interesting. Not sure if it is what he wanted from me. So, what do you think about my chances to be hired, assuming that LP questions went good? YOE 7
Don’t forget to share your offer later :)
Chance of offer: 20% or less (unfortunately)
Based on his feedback or just average success rate of L5? OP completely ignored the behavioral LP questions which were half of each session. Amazon will pass on a stellar coder for bad behavioral and hire okay-ish code if we believe the behavioral is strong. In some ways, we want people that get stuff done rather than the smartest.
We need good storytellers to bullshit the senior leadership.
Everything looks really good for you but the thing to worry about is the manager feedback. Someone saying that my solution is “interesting” rather than correct is concerning. Also the least they expect of you is to solve leetcode easy. I wouldn’t put any egg in this basket for sure. It was a nice practice.
True. “Interesting” is what I say when a candidate gives me a very outlandish solution, like for example, if I ask them “How do you unclog a kitchen sink?” and they respond “I can use a stick of dynamite to clear the blockage in the pipe.” Then I would say “Interesting...”
You have 0% chance. With 7 yoe, you’re targeted for L5 or even maybe L6. To get L5 you need to convince the interviewers that you’re better than 50% of existing L5s at Amazon. The interview performance you described sounds like a borderline L4, and Amazon is unlikely to offer you L4 with 7 yoe unless most of your experience was in another field (like QA, PM, SDET)
Will wait one more year then :)
All depends how you answered your leaderSHIt principle questions
Honestly sounds like a no ... maybe bar raiser will save you to get downleveled but sounds like you went through an l5 loop and didn’t do great. Would you take an l4 offer with 7yoe?
Seems like a no, but it depends how desperate they are on hiring
