Just got promoted to L6 and want to move to a different team because of work quality issues in the current team. Will the move have any adverse impact on career trajectory?
After promo is generally the preferred time to move
There is no better time to move
It would be unAmazonian NOT to move, at least in most instances. Unless your current team/org has such great challenges that would make staying worth it. Are you IC or manager? If manager, then arguably you could be tasked with boosting work quality. Most people I know who get promoted jet pretty quickly. Don’t sweat it. This is Amazon, you’ve gotta cover yourself first.
Don’t switch immediately after promo. Get comfortable in the new role, understand how people’s perception of you changes, and then switch. Being just promoted you are supposed to be at the 20th percentile for your level. Better to move into your new team as a high performer, instead of a below 50% one. First impressions matter!
You need to be doing your new role for at least 6 months before the promotion anyway. The consideration is whether you are getting fresh challenges and learning opportunities.
