L6 SDE at Amazon is solid at $500k avg. Take the higher TC.. Ignore the pip blind bias. That’s not for you

It’s definitely going to be much much faster and at times chaotic here. But everyone goes through that. So do not worry. Newbies have ramp up time.

Find your support people. Experienced people in your group to help mentor and give that mental encouragement when you need it.

Over communicate with your manager. Ensure expectations are very clear around deliverables and milestones. If you’re stuck, spend a reasonable amount of time troubleshooting but seek help quickly if needed. Find the balance between learning things that deliver value/build skill versus time sink roadblocks that are trivial.

Embrace the chaos a bit. It’s not unique to just amazon and fb, but these are two companies you can learn an incredible amount at and gain invaluable experience.

Soon enough, you’ll be a pro and chaos can be an exciting challenge because you’ve developed the skills necessary to be successful in. You may even be so good at it that you’ll be asked to lead others someday

If Amazon pays much better than FB, then definitely choose Amazon. L6 at Amazon has more power than E5. If you care about levels, you can pull a lot more weight as L6 at Amazon. In FB, levels are secretive. An E4 can easily disagree/ignore you because he/she thinks you are a fellow E4. At Amazon, SDE1s will worship you (well, atleast on the outside).

Do you want to focus on design/scoping or coding?

L6 at Amazon is a very wide band, and most teams have at most a single L6. Some have none. L7 promo is both very tough technically and politically. L6 generally don't have to worry about unjustified PIP and hire to fire. You do have to worry about justified PIP but that is the same as in FB.

I understand E5 at FB can still mainly focus on coding. E6 promo is also easier given it is deserved based on performance.

Are you talking about retail? Major AWS teams have at least 1 SDE3 and most have multiple. SDE3 doesn’t mean what it used to.

Yes, major AWS teams have more than one usually. And they should, they’re major… which indicates the importance of an SDE3. It still means what it used to. Bring them over to snap all the time at the same level and much higher comp.
