Hi there, So I’m finalizing my documents for promo this Q to move from SDE L5 to SDE L6. I’m also doing my part time MBA on the side. I have few opportunities in front of me. First I can start looking for SDM opportunities within Amazon. Secondly, the PM-T senior manager offered to coach me on PM work and eventually transition to PM-T. Another friend of mine offered SEM role in LinkedIn. I wanted to reach out to the community and ask about their input on how to decide on the path forward. For me the end goal is to lead an organization that has both product and engineering. To be a successful leader in that front, I need technical depth, people skills and product sense. So I know that I’ll need to do some engineering management work beside product. I don’t think the order matter. Does it? How is SEM roles in LinkedIn compared to Amazon? How about compensation and work life balance? Career growth? Any feedback on LinkedIn culture compared to Amazon? What is the structure of the offer package in LinkedIn?
Senior Eng Manager at LinkedIn is normally managing multiple teams, often with 1-3 managers reporting in. Lots of career growth opportunity if you're good. From what I hear, WLB at LinkedIn is much better than at Amazon. Comp structure is like eng: salary, annual bonus, 4 year stock grant. Refresher grants if you earn them.
Can you really get Senior EM at LinkedIn with no prior management experience?
I hope not.
