L6 at 4.5 YOE. I can smell Amazon's desperation from far away.

L6 is a large band that overlaps 5 and 6 at Meta.

We know amazon hires externally where they think the candidate is at least better than 50% of current L6. So sounds like Amazon is slightly more desperate ;)

OP has a PhD. 5 YOE + PhD should definitely translate to Amazon L6.

probably in a high performant org where they themselves are ambitious. it’s a competitive environment but if you just want to chill you can find a reasonable team and set expectations

You will learn the following at Amazon: 1/ How to lead others and take end to end ownership of ambiguous problems, 2/ How to deliver business value by working backwards from the customers needs, 3/ Work with some of the smartest and driven people in the industry. 4/ Operational excellence which sets the bar in the industry.

As an L6 You will be expected to take charge and deliver. We don’t a make a lot of L6 SDE offers. Mostly because there are gaps in leadership. Many people can solve leet code problems. Very few can lead others, thrive in ambiguity and demonstrate leadership. I am part of BR Core team and see this gap again and again. Some smart people including the BR concluded that you raise the L6 bar. Congrats on that. I was a BR for more than 100 L6, L7 and L8 loops last year therefore I know what I am talking about.

Taking my Amazon hat off and being selfish. Meta has some serious problems to overcome. TikTok and privacy concerns are catching up to them. This is not a technology problem. This is a business model problem with no easy solutions. Meta verse is a long shot with less than 30% chance of success. There is probably lots of internal politics and over hiring based on my discussions with senior folks in Meta. I predict in the next 2-3 years financial reality of over hiring will catch up and management will have to put the house in order.

The best career advice I was ever given was to run towards the fire. That’s where the problems are, that’s where you shine, that’s where you grow.

Go join Amazon. We are hiring you with every intention for you to be successful. Yes you will have to work hard, yes we will demand a lot. You will not get free food as well. What you will learn is much more valuable.

PS: If you want my view on the Amazon team DM me. I can look up their Tech Survey results and find out more about them and give you my unbiased view. Tech Survey is an annual anonymous survey where we ask more than 100 questions on different aspect of team, management, operational load and leadership of the team. The results are open to view for everyone in the company. These results are a good tool to know about the team health.

I’m pretty certain this guy oversold Amazon and downplayed Meta’s opportunity.

the suggestion is good but 4.5 year L6 is still risky, might be better and easier to survive at E5 which has lower scope and doe not have to show enough leadership and does not have to resolve ambiguity.
and the pay is not that bad, but I feel meta E5 top of the band is just 390k, 10k signon applies to the first year only. 430k is a really high number I never heard of before, but might exist, if so, I think op should take meta too, higher pay, lower responsibility

Every tech company does performance management including Google, Meta, Netflix and Microsoft. Amazon is no exception. Amazon did not become what it is by treating talent badly like slave labor. Amazon calls it Pivot, others call it something else. There are lots of safe guards built in the Amazon process to ensure managers are not treating people unfairly.

Every manager wants to retain good performers. In any technology company talent is your biggest asset. When you are starting a new job go with the mind set of working your butt off and become invaluable to the new team. You will gain respect and recognition.

    • If the above mentioned statement is true, then there won't be these many people getting PIPed

Either they have to increase the hiring bar or make the process robust enough to PIP only bad apples.

And yes, every single company evaluates performance. You should wonder why it is only amazon ?

    • So every company does it but people only give a bad rating and repo to Amazon?
