Reading and hearing that L7 is a pretty prestigious level at Amazon. Is this true? What’s the big deal about L7?!

It's a difficult level to get to. If I had to guess I'd say less than 3% of company is L7.

It's 1 level below Director and generally means you're either Senior Manager/Principal (Principal if IC).

Senior managers could easily have 20+ people under them directly or indirectly (primarily tech). If you are a Station/Fulfillment Center L7 who is closer to warehouse/delivery operations, those people could have hundreds indirectly reporting to them.

Principal IC probably means you're both a god at tech and equally socially skilled (people skills are still incredibly important even as Principal IC).

20+ people would be nice. Seen many L7s with more like 50+ indirect reports.

I'm working on a promo doc for L7 now. Gracefully PIP'ing is literally a section. But then again so is "a happy turnaround story mentoring from FOCUS to TT" and "developed a graduate from L4 SDE to L6 SDM with a team of 12" so it evens out.

Can’t wait to get to L8 so I can “sort of” pip a few L7s I know.

Getting to L6 isn't hard but getting L7 is. Although I've seen some mysterious cases of non-talents getting L7 extremely fast...
