Venting/Seeking Advice. I was reached out to last month by a recruiter for an L6 role. I stupidly quoted comp expectations a little too low for L6 band at first. I applied and interviewed for the role and was told I had an all inclined loop and they want to move forward. The offer was for L5, top of the band. I asked why I was downleveled and was told that I was not downleveled in the interview, but was actually interviewed for L5. I was told that I did very well on my L5 interview but that there is no way to bump me up to L6 because that leveling decision has already been made. First questions is this: Is it possible that I was moved to L5 only because of my comp expectations not being in L6 band? According to the recruiter the bar raiser even said I might be L6 material but they can do nothing because I was interviewed for L5. What on earth? I declined the offer as it would require a move across the country and role was not what I applied to (aka not Sr.). Now I'm in a recycle phase and the recruiter is finding all sorts of possible roles that might want me. They originally said I will not need to re-interview since I had an all inclined loop but once I talked to a hiring manager that had a role I was interested in, HR says that manager wants a whole new interview loop. I asked if I could be considered for L6 (since they are going to re-interview me, let me interview at that level, why not?). I was told it is not possible. Seems crazy to me. I can't possibly move up due to re-interview, only down. Why on earth would I want to do that? Last questions: how long can I sit in recycle phase? 6 mon? a year? If I go get an offer from elsewhere that puts me at amzn L6 equivalent will they allow L6 then? Other FANG companies do not have a heavy presence where I live so I would be interviewing for the sole purpose of trying to get amazon to match. Would that be possible/worth the effort? I am seriously considering declining recycle discussions and re-interviewing for L6 a year or two from now. Any suggestions welcome.
I don’t want to divulge too much at risk of quasi-anonymity being lost but I’ll give this: YOE: ~5years Current TC: 165k plus paper money Expectation was right where they gave offer, top of L5 band (245-265k) I’m going to leave locations out as it would be a dead giveaway. I appreciate your understanding.
Some facts to relate to this Average yoe for external L6 is ~10 (few exceptions) Average ctc for external L6 is ~320-350k Downleveling is common here after interview debrief is done but your case is strange because they didn't communicate the level you were interviewed for.
It's just one of those Amazon things. I experienced the same. I declined the offer and moved on.
Lol.. looking for L6 with 5 years of work ex.. wow , no wonder no HM would consider for L6 .. it’s like 1 post where because of stock appreciation n with less than 10 years of work ex, candidate was looking for a package of more than 700 k… like do they think companies r that stupid .. it’s like buddy u got lucky because of IPO or major stock appreciation so good U made almost a million but asking for such comp in a new company is laughable .. such candidates should be rejected because of lack of common sense in pre screening round itself or if they r that brilliant, why not open your own org like gates or zucky !

Sad to hear but starting to see this as a real concern, not just a joke/trend on blind to bash amzn. I specifically like amazon due to them having high TC options in offices with lower cost of living. Unfortunately my other options would require moving to Bay or Seattle. Maybe it isn’t worth it.
