Amazon London vs Google Zurich

I do have the following offers, which one should I consider? I have 3+ YOE and I am not sure why I got only Level 3 in Google one. Also, I would expect more TC in Zurich. Amazon: - Title: SDE 2 - Base Salary: 68 000 GBP - Signing Bonus: 22 000 GBP - RSUs: 40 - Location: London (permanent residency after 5 years) Google: - Title: SRE (level 3) - Base Salary: 119 000 CHF - Yearly Bonus: 15% - Stocks: 70 000 USD - Location: Zurich (permanent residency after 10 years) #offer #tech #google #amazon #zurich #london

Take Zurich. If you are a person that is keen towards traveling, hiking, nature, cleanliness, incredible food, and beautiful towns, then being in Central Europe is perfect. Zurich may be a bit boring itself, the people (mostly northern Swiss) may be a bit arrogant, but you are a few hours train ride or flight away from thousands of incredible cities, different cultures, architecture, and some of the best food in the world. Get yourself a modest place in Zurich, save some money, and use the rest on traveling around Europe and having the time of your life.

Thanks for your reply. Any idea about the job level and compensation? I already has started working in Amazon with the above offer. Does it deserve the move?

3 YOE, level 3 is probably standard. L4 is more around 4-5 years of experience (any Googlers, correct me if I’m wrong, I’m just going off the info provided by my friends that work at Google). I would negotiate the offer higher if you could: try asking for 150k and 100k stocks. They might meet you halfway, but I’m not sure if your offer is at at the 80th percentile or not. Either way, I’d take the Zurich offer over the London offer even without negotiations. Don’t get me wrong, London is a great city, but it’s also a shit show now that the UK has left the EU. If you stick it out for 10 years in Switzerland, your residency there is much more powerful than the residency in the UK. The quality of life in Switzerland also greatly surpasses that of the UK. Oh, I should also point out that amazon is generally not a great company to work for. Google is, and I should also note that the google cafeteria food at the Zurich office is incredibly good. It’s actually better than a lot of “fine dining” I’ve had in America 😂

London. Zürich sucks as a city and the Swiss Germans are rude. London is the greatest city in the world.

Salesforce BndTheKnee Jun 16, 2020

Sounds a bit misconstrued. Any points to back your claim? Don’t get me wrong. I also think Zurich is a bit boring, and the Swiss-Germans are very arrogant. I also think London is a fantastic city, but you have much greater access to travel and the rest of Europe from Zurich, and the quality of life is much better.

IBM oddblock Jun 16, 2020

Worked in both. Travel a lot easier from London in terms of where you can get to. I would never call Zürich a transport hub. Frankfurt is more the transport hub.

Both offers are rather poor in my opinion (i.e. lower bounds of level bands). But why not try and live in both for several years?

Zurich gives permanent residency after 5 years. You just need to pass a language test (German B1) and strictly speaking you're not guaranteed/entitled to get it (unlike on year 10), but people get it all the time. But citizenship will take 10-12 years, whereas in UK you get it after 6.

Amazon gYLH88 Jun 17, 2020

Are the stocks for Google over 4 years or per year?

Google 5kids2feed Jun 17, 2020

Definitely over 4

What? If over 4, TC barely goes above 150k, isn't that bit low?!

Amazon wabahi Jun 18, 2020

You can definitely get more base in Amazon, 80k~ is what I would ask for

Bloomberg dwKO44 Jun 30, 2020

Swiss Permanent residency should be 5 years. The salary is low for Google in Zürich but it doubles your take home pay compare to Amazon. Zurich is not more expensive than London. Downside Zurich is dull and boring especially for expats. (Lived in both)

OP, can you please tell me how you got contacted by Google Zurich? Referral?

Bloomberg boooogler May 30, 2021

Google over Amazon but UK over Switzerland. I would say stay with Google. Swiss is a beautiful place!!
