A recruiter reached out to me about a Manager of Program Management role at Amazon. Thanks to blind I knew to ask the HM about the Amazon level when he interviewed me today. It's an L6 and a business role with Prime. I am pretty sure their TC is lower than my current $580k (16 yoe). Also going from a VP of product (albeit at a small business) to a manager of PgM feels like step down... I could overlook that for the right team, product, and TC. They already scheduled the second interview for tomorrow. They never asked about my TC expectations. Based on levels.fyi $250k is the top of the band. Is there any upside or possible maneuvering that could benefit me by continuing to interview? (Other than practice).
Manager of PgM will get you by the most 300-320k
So no upside to continuing with this interviewing?
Nope. Ask for L7 , Sr Manager role
Yes - but the role has to be pitched at the scope of an L7. It might not be the HM, but the headcount’s approved responsibility
If the HM already told me it's an L6, I doubt there is room for L7. What do you think?
Let them know you’re interested in sr manager of product or program.
Are you looking to change from product to program? An L6 manager is a mid-career role...unless there are specific things you are excited about with this role, I'd look at more senior openings.
No, I have done program but I like product better. I will do some research on levels to figure out the right titles to look for (since they map to the right TC) Should I cancel the upcoming interview? What reason wouldn't black list me?
580k!!! Where do you work? Also, as a VP which is a C-suite why would demote yourself to mid level management?!
Because I work at a small media company with a revenue less than $100 mill. Product Management is all about the type, scale and impact of the product. The PgM role at Amazon has a bigger impact. But will I be able to come out of that hole of TC and level fast enough to make it worthwhile?
L7 is sellable vs L6 which is very common at Amazon. Selling yourself as an L7 with VP experience is far easy than L6
