It seems pretty broad. Do they actually enforce it. How would someone move from Amazon to Google or Microsoft or any other company because amazon competes in so many domains.
What about in NY ?
NY is really difficult to argue a non-compete was violated. In more progressive states rarely will it be enforced. It costs a lot of money and time Amazon didn't want to waste for one employee.
So how broad is it ?
Agreed it’s broad. I’ve seen it mainly to dissuade jumping from AWS to Azure to GCP. I confirmed with my recruiter before signing my deal that specifically the 2x places that were direct competitors on my product are Epic Games and Unity. All else was fine.
Are you a part of Lumberyard? If so, do you enjoy it?
Yes I do. Good WLB, great L6 and L7 managers above me with a plan in place for me to get to L6 in < 2 years which will put me in that year 3 vesting period. And we’ve got approved for 30+ headcount this year across the entire 200 man org.
I didn’t realize NCs were a thing for tech companies. Is there garden leave provided? What are the terms of garden leave generally?
Tell me about the time that you worry about non compete ?
Lol, there is no such thing as a non compete in the US, any lawyer will tell you it's not enforceable. It shouldn't even cross your mind, because if it was relevant it would be taken care of by your new companies senior counsel.
My understanding is most companies will not pursue with the exception of strategic leadership roles. If you're an L8 and up, be prepared to consult and retain counsel.
Which state? They’re unenforceable in California. Mostly I wouldn’t worry about it so long as you leave on good terms and don’t move to a new job where there is a blatant conflict.
