Does anyone have experience with the non-compete clause in Amazon's employment agreement? It seems pretty strict on any competing entity for 18 months after separation. I'm assuming Amazon wouldn't put this in if it weren't enforceable in Washington? How does it work if I for instance wanted to go work on Azure at Microsoft in the future. I would assume they wouldn't bother enforcing it for regular software engineers, but still curious on other's experiences.

Unless you're working on IP and then plan to bring it to the new job to use, its not really enforceable. They just dont want you to poach clients, employees and IP and all should be well. And they have to have cause for a legal case. If it was an actual issue, you wouldnt see all these people jumping from one FAANG to another and sometimes even coming back to the same company again, regardless of level.
Plenty of folks have gone from AWS to OCI. I wouldn't worry about it

Ever wonder how a few of your coworkers got hired in the first place?
What’s your role? I’ve heard they don’t generally bother enforcing with L6 and below, unless you’re working on some next gen stuff.
A lowly L4. My biggest concern I suppose is when applying to other companies they will have me fill out a form stating whether I have any non-compete agreements keeping me from working with them... and I don't see how to get around having to answer yes and disqualifying myself. At the same time people obviously switch from Amazon to Microsoft etc. all the time.
I have never heard of any company abandoning a candidate because they have a non-compete, or even ask that upfront for that matter. It’s probably standard process for every company to have a non compete, so not worth asking. They also might already know about Amazon’s non compete. Either way, you can worry about that once you get an offer, but IMO, unlikely it matters for L4 position. I know someone at L5 who’s moving to a competitor in a loosely similar role and it never came up in their departing discussion with manager/HR.
