Amazon Offer - Paycut

Interviewed for L5 but got L4. Recruiter told I will be on L5 path as soon as I join (this is BS ik)

Recruiter asked competing offers and current comp and straight up told me we cannot beat any of your offer or current comp. Recruiter was rude once I shared my current comp numbers and was like you couldn't clear L5 so don't expect these numbers by us (in rude tone). I told her can you please wait till Google HC result and she was like for one candidate I can't keep the entire pool waiting, I will generate the offer & you can sign it in 48 hours or leave it.

Current TC: 180K (155k base rest RSUs)
On track to promotion in December (180k base later - 220k TC)
Amazon will offer me numbers by Wednesday.

What should I do? Should I take a pay cut if they don't beat my comp? Is pay cut justified for Amazon brand name?

Full time US YOE: < 1 YOE
Total YOE: 2.5 years

      There were other 3 candidates that day. We met after interview and all had same opinion on Manager.
      Personal feeling - I could see myself being put into PIP by manager's expressions in the interview. He was brilliant (L6 in 5 years) but didn't found him pleasant to talk to in the interview.

  • OP - if the hiring manager is as bad as you say, and you can imagine getting on a pip, please for the love of God don't proceed further with Amazon! Even if they offer a higher TC, your mental health is worth a lot more!

    Recruiters promise lot of things to get prospective employees onboard - but once u get hired , it’s u and your manager that need to work hard to get level set.

    I got the numbers (L4) -
    172K TC in Seattle.
    135 base, 35.5 year 1 sign on, 24k year 2 sign on, 38 RSUs.

      Yeah I think it’s a really dumb practice that’s been masked by a hugely performing stock. Without the stock WAY outperforming I think talented engineers will find superior offers outside Amazon.

      Only consider 5-20% of RSUs in your TC calculation

      5% if you get "PIP"d out before you 2 year anniversary (very common),, 20% if you get PIP'D out before your 3rd year anniversary.

    Amazon can beat 180K TC for L4. They will give you an exploding offer before Google HC result so be prepared for it.

      Probably not 230k... I guess it depends on your interview, but I had another 200k+ offer and they didn't match. If you crushed it, I assume you can try for near 200k

    When comparing Amazon offer TC, only consider the stocks that will vest on the first 2 years.

    More than half of folks get churned out before 2 years are over.

      Best to only include the first 2 years of stock vesting.
