Did onsite for AWS Seattle last week and received an offer: Salary: $181k Signon: $148k Year 1, $108k Year 2 RSUs: 100 Year 1 TC: $345k, Year 2 TC: $305k Did not expect offer to be this high for SDE2. I'm currently an L3 going for promo this perf and I'm pretty sure L4 at Google doesn't go this high for a promotion. Was mostly interviewing around to see what's out there and was surprised by this. Is it worth to switch to Amazon given this TC? Worried about the stressful work and PIP culture so not sure if a $100k raise is worth it. For people at Amazon, how is oncall and workload like at AWS? The offer is for a service that's been around for a few years and the manager says it is in a more mature stage. Update: Negotiated the offer: Salary: $190k Signon: $160k Year 1, $119k Year 2 RSUs: 110 Year 1 TC: $368K Year 2 TC: $361k TC: $240k (Bay Area) YOE: 2
Yea solid offer . Not every team at amazon just optimize for delivering everything fast and burn teams out. Plenty that have good wlb. All sde2 are expected to drive complex projects forward, document extensively and communicate well .
Don't have a lot of experience with AWS. Are new hires given some time to ramp up?
Yes , you will go through training. And Get Tasks that progressively increase in complexity. Just bring a lot of curiosity to dive deep and learn. People are very helpful and empathetic. Only those that donāt take ownership and continue to not align with what the org is driving get into trouble like everywhere else.
You can get 400k. I would still not jump from G to Amazon.
Even for Seattle?
Yes.
Could you share your interview experience
Common System Design question, leetcode easies and mediums. Prepare for the behavioral questions since there are a lot of them
Normal ds + algos and one systems design for on-site. Lot of annoying LP type of questions
Tough choice
Join for stock split and boomerang back to G
What's the point? Majority of rsu will vest in 3rd year
Donāt. Tough to get into Google at higher levels later
OP, how was your interview experience ? All algo coding and system design ? was there any Object Oriented programming round ?
Behavioral, Algo, and system design only. One round focused on writing clean structured code
Clean structured code as in clean bug free code or like coming up with good class/function name and all that ? How is this different algo/ds round ?
Ask for 400K from Amazon and get it in writing. Amazon is desperate these days and you'll likely get it. Then take that Amazon offer back to Google and say you need a big retention offer to stay. You'll most likely get that too if you were any good as a G employee. They should be able to bump up your pay by 50-100K. Let us know how it goes.
Hi congrats on your offer! Would you mind sharing your prep for coding and sys. design? Thank you in advance.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Are you used to rest and vesting at Google? Then Amazon might not be a good for you.
WLB is good, but I still work around 40-45 hours per week. Is it common to have around the same working hours in AWS?
I work less than 40 hours. I honestly think PIP and fear is just overblown on blind. Have you negotiated the offer? The offer seems solid
