Amazon PIP - How common?

Every few days, I see someone posting that they got PIPed at Amazon. Frome what I find online, it seems to be a horrible state to be in. So, out of curiosity, how common is it for people, at Amazon, to end up in such a situation? Is is just based on your performance or do any other factors contribute to it as well? If it just depends on the performance, how badly does one need to fu*k up (according to the manager) to end up getting PIPed? P.S.- All the best to all of you guys who are in this state right now. Hope you sort out things soon. TC- $160k

It is not as bad as it appears on Blind. The probability is less than 10%. In some high performing teams, it was close to zero.

What % of people are let go after being PIPed on average? If it’s 90% like I’ve read 10% PIP rate is actually pretty high.

That is why I said that it is less than 10%. It depends on team, geography etc. In the teams that i have worked, it was close to 5% or even less. Hard to say how many people clear PIP. Nobody would have good data on this.

If you're in a fast growing business and your team delivers consistently you'll be ok. First sign of slow down and cost cutting then the PIP game begins.

It's quite common. I was there in AWS for 3 years and have seen 2 of teammates getting piped. Managers at amazon are given lot of power so lot of them misuse it. You might get piped if your manager thinks that you are fitting in amazon culturally. Amazon calls this as URA: unregrettable attrition. Because this whole process is very subjective to its relatively easy to prove why amazon should get rid of you. I would recommend if you have another good offer take that over amazon. You have to be lucky to find a good team/manager in amazon.

pip was low before our product launched. People at risk for pip were non-Indian with indian manager. After product launch they wanted to reduce headcount, pip rate was roughly 50% an included L7 principals, L6 seniors, everyone except filthy managers.

I don't know why Indian managers like to poop on non-Indian direct reports. Like, we're supposed to all be professional here and treat people the same regardless of their race and all I keep hearing about is how these Indian managers love to PIP non-Indians. My friends at other companies have noticed this too.

Under low performing directors it can between 8 to 12%

10% but LE managers use it as a tool to o keep their no up. My manager lost 70% of his team but they won’t consider him LE
