have 2 offers - one from Amazon for a L6 PM role and one from Facebook for a L5 PM role. Both in Seattle. What would you pick in my shoes? FB TC is slightly higher than Amazon. Folks who work at Amazon/FB, what TC should i expect? Trying to make sure i know the averages as i go into negotiating
FB. Amazon is a shitty , frugal, ungrateful company. FB has amazing benefits and takes better care of its employees.
Takes care? Lol
FB... you’ll get refreshers etc, better tech reputation, great perks and benefits. WLB is presumably bad at both places, so go with FB I’d say.
Thanks! My only worry with Facebook is that they are not going anywhere
FB still has insane user base. They will do fine in the near future. Amazon is always hiring a lot and you can try again in a couple of years. Also, from what I heard, promos at amzn take a long time whereas FB gives more growth opportunity.
I believe Amazon L6 PM is more equivalent to a FB L4 (don’t quote me on this, but I think it is the case). This means FB will have higher level plus better culture across the board. You may find certain products at Amazon more interesting though depending on which org/team you’d be on...culture is hit or miss at Amazon too. Which team at Amazon are you looking at?
Amazon L6 is FB or G L5.
Not quite true, it spans L4 and L5 but FB frequently downlevels PMs from Amazon unless you have a LOT of prior PM experience. https://www.levels.fyi/?compare=Amazon,Facebook&track=Product%20Manager
Amazon will give you a ton of responsibility, make you a better executive and give you a chance to work in many different industries. FB is declining due to poor leadership, crappy products and toxic internal culture. Obviously some good and bad teams at both companies. YMMV.
Thanks! Any insights on what ballpark TC for a L6 PM should be?
Ballpark $225K for Amazon L6 PM. That’s cash plus RSUs.
Fb since it’s actually product first.
I work on FB marketplace and have several PM's come from Amazon. For a bit more nuance, I would say one big difference that matters a lot for Pming is where your direction comes from. I know one person that came from Amazon that stated that her role was very executional because all her directions came from her higher ups. Facebook tends to be very bottom up. As a PM, we set the direction for our product, and while there is definitely some politicking, it makes the job fun, yet a bit stressful. However, if you don't want to think strategically/ or don't think you're a very creative person (and I don't mean that in a bad way, execution has its own set of skills), I would consider Amazon. FB L5 Comp should be around 300k all in
You realize your sample set is people who left amazon because they were unhappy, right?
I’d go to FB. Amazon PM/PMT joins around 220-240k TC afaik. FB has much better benefits and work afaik. Amazon is a crapshoot plus it’s super rough to get to L7, you need to be on a winning team for that.
@ehensudie what are the factors in getting to L7?
You need to deliver a significant project successfully. E.g. start in the early stages and work on it all the way to launch and then the product should atleast do okay. Or on existing products, deliver some significant value. I don’t know of any L7 IC PMs (Individual, not managers), so probably manage too - unsure about this. You also need at least 4-5 L7s to vouch for you as well. It’s not easy, that’s why many prefer moving outside and coming back in at a higher level.

I hate working with Product Managers at Amazon. They’re always “busy”, don’t produce any work, take any ownership, attend any meetings, or own any major feature flows. Useless upwards-managing grifters.
Current level at Microsoft?
