I am looking for a Product Manager role. Is Product Manager-Tech the same as PM? And which has better comp and career path at Amazon between PM, PM-T and TPM? Thanks
You should know this already if you work at FB. FB has all these roles
FB only has PM. Not PM-T. And product Tpms at FB only do project management. I am definitely not looking to move to TPM but recruiter said TPMs are better than PMs in some orgs which are more enterprises or infra.
PM-T and PM are both Product Managers @ Amazon. The “-T” denotes “technical” and means that those PMs are required to demonstrate technical knowledge/skills/experience such that they can work effectively with engineering and research teams. Typically the PMs in AWS, Devices, the various stealth and strategic programs, etc are technical in nature. The PMs driving pure marketing and business efforts don’t necessarily require that skill set. TPM is technical program management which requires an even stronger technical skill set. All of the TPMs in my org have solid engineering backgrounds and can dig in deep with my engineers. All these job families offer good career paths with growth and impact - there are obviously some key variables around team/business you’re on that will influence scope and degree of opportunity.
Where do you want your career to go? What’s your role and level at Facebook?
L5 PM @ fb. Only looking to move if it's L6. I have a strong eng background, but I want to stay in product.
TPM at Amazon is a slightly different and better role than at Facebook. And it has a clearly defined path to engineering management. If you want to stay in Product, PMT is a way to go. You get to build product or technology as a product manager. If you do well in the interview, the comp will be about the same as you make at Facebook but with a hope of an aggressive stock growth as most of it will be stock. Don’t look at comp.fyi as they are likely to make an exception for you as an industry hire.
